Mikhail Gorbachev is a hero in the West for ending the Cold War, but in Russia he is remembered more
dimly as the man who let the Soviet Union collapse
There is perhaps no more telling example of how differently Mikhail Gorbachev is viewed in the West and in Russia than his role in a 1998 television commercial for Pizza Hut.
The ad showed the legacy of the Soviet Unions last leader, who died Tuesday at the age of 91, being debated but ultimately applauded for bringing about difficult reforms that allowed such Western fast food joints to come to Russia in the first place.
The ad aired all over the world, but never in Russia. Thats because his legacy there is seen quite differently, with many holding him in disdain for allowing the Soviet empire to break apart and sending Russia into a long political and economic tailspin.
That viewpoint is held by no one more than Russias current president, Vladimir Putin, who has often called the end of the Soviet Union the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century.
