Its fun watching congressional Republican leaders try to claim that President Biden has insulted half the country by calling out Donald Trump and his scumbag support base. Republican leaders are walking right into a trap when it comes to this.
Polling shows that a majority of Americans want Trump criminally charged. Polling also consistently shows that about half of Republican voters want someone other than Trump as their 2024 nominee. Yet the Republican Party leadership still clings to Trumps political carcass.
Watching Joe Biden bait all these midterm Republican candidates into loudly defending Trump, given how toxically unpopular Trump is with general election audiences, is a thing of beauty. The kicker is that the Republicans didnt have to take this bait. They could have just said nothing in response to Bidens speech, and tried to prevent the speech from gaining enough oxygen to get any lasting media coverage either way.
And so, even as Donald Trump becomes more toxically unpopular than ever, and even as the Feds prepare to arrest him for espionage in a way thatll make him even more radioactive with mainstream voters, the Republican Party is marrying itself to Trumps ghost more loudly than ever. Good. Hopefully the Republicans will continue to make this mistake all the way through November.

(10,435 posts)Considering that it wasn't aired except on cable news networks, most people probably wouldn't be aware the speech even happened if republicons were capable of keeping their big mouths shut.

(17,372 posts)Hard to believe but fucker Carlson aired portions of it while Biden was speaking just
to spin how evil Biden is to their viewers. Only watched him about 5 minutes.
So he was even eager to take the bait. This is going to help us in the midterms.

(17,372 posts)I hope every organization looking into tfg's misdeeds does not issue a warrant for his arrest until
after the midterms. Doing so before might energize his followers, we got Rs backed into a corner
presently like they haven't experienced in years. Let's keep it that way.

(32,097 posts)Every time something happens, Trump just keeps on digging himself even deeper. Just look at the whole warrant situation. We wouldn't have even known about it had he not gone on Fake Twitter and whined and screamed about it. And, every time he demanded that affidavit information get released or demanded a special master, the information that came out was damning. He's just making things worse and worse for himself every time he tries to counterpunch. I'm fine with them dragging it out, especially if it means him racking up even more charges. It deflates his cult, too. Hopefully enough that most of them just stay home on election day.
The other part of it is that he taints all of the other Republicans who are still coming to his defense, which is quite a few of them. Standing behind Trump is not going to end well for quite a few of them. Not to mention that the party is still paying for Trump's legal bills. The longer he's free, the more bills he piles up for them, and the less money they can spend on other things, like smearing Democrats.

(6,561 posts)They would abandon him if they were hearing from the other GOP leadership about how wrong all these issues are.

(3,205 posts)They have no choice. At least 10% of their base is die-hard cult members, the people who follow his rallies, buy his merchandise, send him money and would vote for him even if he shot a pregnant woman in the middle of 5th avenue. If they turn on TFG, that 10% will go home and quit voting. They will follow nobody - not even Deathsantis - like they have followed TFG. As close as most elections are, if they lose that 10% they're out of power for a couple of election cycles.
