(3,089 posts)But I have always voted democrat. I hated Nixon in high school and hated Reagan in college. I was all in 100% for Obama. Supported Hillary and was very disappointed with that result. Absolutely despised every minute of the Trump administration. Voted for Biden/Harris and very glad they won.
I sincerely hope you are right and republican women will vote against the GOP agenda 2024.

and, based on the results in Kansas and all the special elections which the Democrats have won, despite the rumored "red wave" (which I believe, the only "red wave" in Rovember will be the political blood of MAGAt candidates flowing), there will be a great turnout of Democratic-leaning "non-voters" who rarely turn out, but WILL VOTE this midterm... mostly women...
With the Roe reversal, "the dog has caught the car". I don't think the result is going to be very good for "the (MAGAt) dog"...
I am a life-long white male Democrat. I can recall aquiring a "McGovern" button during that campaign when I was just 10 years old. Yeah, the results were very disappointing to me--- but the villain of that campaign was out of office in less than 2 years later...

(3,089 posts)I know I live in a very blue state (Maryland), but everyone I know is very energized and excited to vote BLUE in November. My friends and I all totally reject the entire Trump/MAGA agenda. It sucks.

(4,442 posts)because it was a mostly pro-slavery state prior to and during the civil war...
and may have only been saved from secession because the unionist governor at the time, would not allow the legislature to be called into session (where they might have voted for a secessionist resolution) while all the southern states were seceding from the union... and the Lincoln government had many of the pro-secessionist legislators arrested...
Maryland has remained as a solid Democratic state, while all of the south fell away with the passage of the civil rights and voting rights acts...
Of course Maryland was a border state, but so was West Virginia (which seceded from Virginia during the war.)
It is only a historical puzzle to me, although I am very grateful for Maryland's loyalty to the Democratic party for all that time.
Of course, the Democratic party prior and after to the civil war was very racist, too supportive of slavery, and very wrong about slavery and civil rights through that whole period... but the party changed, starting with the FDR period, moreso with Kennedy and especially with President Johnson pushing through the civil rights and voting rights acts, which he correctly predicted would "lose the south for a generation" (or more...)
Anyway..... can you provide any insights on your state's political orientation? It seems very unique to me.

(3,089 posts)The more urban areas lean heavily Democrat, the suburban areas lean somewhat Democratic and the rural areas are strongly Republican. Baltimore City, Prince Georges County, Howard County and Montgomery County almost always vote Democrat. Baltimore County is a toss-up. The eastern shore and western Maryland remain predominantly conservative.

(4,442 posts)of becoming a majority racist-Republican state after the passage of the civil rights and voting rights acts of the 1960s?
(as all the rest of the south became Republican in the 20 years after that).... ?
Maryland did not, and thank God for that. They stayed with the newer more enlightened Democratic Party... which was dominated by the Northern liberal wing of the party. In fact Maryland is one of the most reliable Democratically-voting states (although the history suggests that it should be otherwise)
You live there.... I only ask for your thoughts on it. I presume you are younger than me...
Maybe demographics have something to do with it... and maybe political heritage I suppose....
In the future, I believe as you do, that women will have more control over the political future of Maryland, as in every other state...
If you can find no more enlightening "answers" to my question, that is fine... It has only been a puzzle to me. I am a devout self-taught student of the civil war, and its political aftermath, and I would have predicted that Maryland would have ended up on the "wrong side" politically, afterwards... abandoning the Democratic party, but they did not...
Thank you for your conversation, and your consideration. If you have any ideas on this issue, I would be very glad to hear them.

(4,442 posts)They do outnumber the men, of course... and should be much more angry. What the Roe reversal has done, threatens their very lives...
I will do my best to have a hand in it... but I pray that women voters will shock the political world in this country, come Roevember!
