Great photo!
When I read this, I thought, "Was?" Then I thought, "Could it be?" And then I googled.
What can I say? I've been keeping weird hours lately. Just got online, haven't turned on the TV, just came to DU and this happened to be the first thing I clicked on. RIP, Elizabeth R. 🇬🇧

(10,054 posts)According to British press, the Queen liked most of our American presidents & first ladies - but Barack & Michelle Obama were among her very favorites....

(6,934 posts)It includes every feature of her face, and is way stronger and brighter than an official smile. As is even more clear if one looks at a larger image of the same. Just beautiful.

She did her duty and led as best as she could.

(1,639 posts). . . It was pretty apparent to everyone that HM QE2 knew how to communicate a right regal set down upon anyone who genuinely displeased her. She did not do that to Michelle. And the fact that she was First Lady at the time wouldn't have stopped the Queen. The British are masters of understated communication regardless of someone's position.
The genuine liking and enjoyment of each other's company was clear to anyone watching. The fact that President Obama and the First Lady are the sort of people who can convey respect for the elderly (remember, we had a "First Grandma" in the White House) as well as heartfelt warmth was a big plus.
The three of them shared an understanding of duty and responsibility. Given all their respective titles, none was (or still is) possessed of a self-serving attitude. That's one of the many reasons that they probably got on as well as they did.

Snips:
Royal officials are now in touch with the Queen's insurers and Prime Minister Tony Blair to find out who will pick up the massive repair bill. Palace staff said they had never seen the Queen so angry as when she saw how her perfectly-maintained lawns had been churned up after being turned into helipads with three giant H landing markings for the Bush visit.
The rotors of the President's Marine Force One helicopter and two support Black Hawks damaged trees and shrubs that had survived since Queen Victoria's reign. And Bush's army of clod-hopping security service men trampled more precious and exotic plants.
-------------
"Some of the roses, flowers and shrubs damaged are thought to be rare varieties named after members of the Royal Family and planted by the Queen Mother and Queen.

(16,541 posts)I would have been furious, too. In fact, I'm furious right now, just hearing about it.
I wonder who did pick up the tab for the repairs. I would have said send the bill to the shrub, but he wouldn't have paid it himself--the American people would have.
