On the night of the 2018 midterm elections, as a wave of anti-Trump sentiment swept Democrats to take control of the House, Mitt Romney urged Joe Biden to run for president, according to a new book, The Guardian reports.
Said Romney: You have to run.
Romneys exhortation to a man then seen as a likely challenger to Donald Trump in 2020 will probably further enrage the former president, his supporters and the Republican party they dominate.

(54,436 posts)When you already have more money than you'll ever spend during the rest of your life (and I don't see a Romneyrocket to Mars in his future), at some point you think about your legacy. Not everyone does, but I think he is getting an inkling that he might. Not everyone with money is interested in going out as a mere footnote and leaving the heirs to have fun on their deceased ancestor's nickel.

(37,161 posts)...but Trump showcased the foam, instead of the "establishment" tactic of using it but pretending it wasn't there and that the success was was due to wide support for their "principles".
Remember, Trump made a bargain with them: Rubber-stamping their pet policies (esp. judges) in exchange for loyalty.

(15,467 posts)It's not (most) of Trump's positions that he has a problem with, it's Trump himself. Mitt doesn't support insurrections, and he knows that Biden won. Doesn't mean he's gonna be on our side on abortion, guns control, or taxes.

Trump was (and is) a threat to our democracy. Romney, whatever his other flaws (which are many), at least has moral clarity on that front.

(16,937 posts)Well stated - he saw Biden as the man that could get rid of IQ45 and still allow 'Mittens' to have a life within his own party.
I'm also gonna' give creds to 'Mittens' for having the integrity to - no matter how 'weakly' - step up and do the right thing.
The 'conflicts' going through his own brain must be overwhelming - 'my country' - 'my party' - 'my wealth' - 'my integrity' -------
Hey - at least he seems to be capable of having such actual thoughts........
