(5,126 posts)"More than a first cousin away would be second cousins" is genetically not likely to cause problems and you won't have the same Grandma, same Great Grandma maybe.
BUT to equate relationships with second cousins in the same sentence with INCEST IS NOT A BIG PROBLEM is SO STUPID it should be tattooed on his forehead.
Incest is the crime of two members of the same family having sexual intercourse, for example a father and daughter, or a brother and sister.
Why is incest a crime? The main reasoning behind laws that make it a crime is that it causes harm to family relationships and that it can result in genetic defects in children.
ALSO typically "incest" is a RAPE because the offender is older and more powerful than the victim and the victim is often not given a choice.
Inbreeding among first cousins if adults and consensual is a stupid game of genetic roulette, but it isn't the same as a parent or older sibling raping a child without their consent.

HOWEVER, if you listen to the whole interview he also goes into the most cringe-worthy discussion of pheromones explaining why daughters (including his own) evolutionarily diminish attraction to their father's smell, unlike their mother. It was truly awful, though--even more so because he is so clueless as to how this comes across to the general public not indoctrinated in evolutionary biology, genetics or medicine.
So his cluelessness is what is nailing him, not so much the "technical facts."

(71,542 posts)science credit...he had them doing labs and lab notebooks...it was like a survey of Biology course...pretty damn hard in the summer too. But the professor simply could not understand why his students were not grateful to learn this wonderful subject...I also worked in the animal labs which is why I did not go into research in the end. And one holiday the custodians turned of the lights in the mice/rat room. This is bad because rats turn feral in the darkness. Anyway one had escaped he was a pet that I had raised myself...Charlie brown. He bit the hell out of my hand and required like 10 stitches and a tetanus shot.
The same professor ordered me to euthanize the rat. I refused the thing had chased me around the room before attacking me and was now captured in a special cage and hissed at anyone who came near him. I refused to do it. Dr. X gave me a stern talking to and announced he himself would do it. He then went to the lab. I refused to even observe. He came back about 30 minutes later and announced that perhaps Dr. U might want the rat to feed his snakes and wanted me to check with Dr. U. The good Doctor said no, he thought the rat might hurt his snakes. So Charlie Brown was still going strong when I graduated. He was in a cage where it could be cleaned without removing him and he could be fed the same way. He lived to a ripe old age and became famous among students and faculty.

They ended up as pets which is strictly illegal by the way. I decided not to go into research as I could not endure animals in the lab. I understand that it is necessary and all, but I just can't do it.

Turned out the hamsters were male and female. So shortly thereafter, I discovered 6 tiny baby hamsters in the cage, so I modified my experiment to document the growth cycle of hamsters. I got an A- and my friends each got a hamster. End of Biology career.

(23,175 posts)My Dad's father's youngest half-brother married my Dad's maternal aunt's older daughter. My generation knew about the marriage and noticed that while the people were beloved, the adults acted funny about their marriage and family ties, didn't talk much about it. When I got into geneaology, I realized that even though a half-uncle had married his niece, they weren't related by blood. They were close in age, and adults when they got married. I can see why the generations involved didn't have much to say, and I felt relief when I understood the genetic relationship. Their daughter, my 3rd cousin, told me her parents when she was 14 and told his parents on the way home that he was going to marry her.
I guess it was good to know about their relationship. It made it easier for our parents to discuss incest and why we couldn't marry our cousins or siblings. My pre-teen grands just brought the subject of marriages up, which was interesting, to say the least.

(9,354 posts)but this is something not taught in school. A lot of people think that a relationship which is actually first cousin once removed is a second cousin - and haveno idea what "removed" even means in family history. In one of E. Nesbit's books the children met anothe child who claimed to be a fifth cousin of Queen Victoria 17 times removed, and after mich thought came to the conclusion that this cousin must have loved the Queen very much to have tried to see her (and been removed) so many times.
Besides, Franklin and Eleanor's kids turned out just fime.
LiberalFighter
(53,544 posts)I also have 1st cousins all the way to 10x removed.
Or Half 1st cousins?
TigressDem
(5,126 posts)1st cousin 1x removed is your cousin's child. Now depending on how old your cousin is, there could be a cradle robbing situation there.
10 times removed are probably corpses, since it goes back generations past your 3rd great grand parent.
Now necrophilia is gross, but probably no genetic issues as no reproduction, but there could be residual STDs so I probably would advise against it any way.

LiberalFighter

(26,012 posts)that first cousin marriages were pretty common in the past, and second cousins even more so.
I was able to trace several ancestral lines on one side of one grandmother's family back to colonial New England and from there, to Medieval England. There were yeoman farmers on England who increased their land holdings by marrying into other, local yeoman farmers' families and then kept the lands in the family by marrying cousins. The first time I saw it on a chart and realized what it was, I nearly wretched.
But then, in America, a couple of their descendants married into colonial families who descended from the Plantagenet dynasty in which cousins (descendants of Edward III's large family) routinely married each other and fought wars with each other over the lines of succession.
I am grateful that more recent lines did not marry any cousins. Many descendants of colonial Puritans have a few cousin marriages in their family trees from Britain and even in America in the early colonial generations.
Cousin marriages happened in other countries, too, and not just among nobles and royals. People in small villages who did not travel far beyond maybe the next village ended up being related to each other after a few generations.
BTW, inbreeding does not create genetic defects if there aren't any in the family to begin with. Inbreeding allows existing defects, especially ones that are genetically recessive, to increase and flourish within a family.
Personally, cousin marriages are repulsive to me, and it's creepy to know that they were in my family tree several generations ago, but it seems that they exist in quite a few family trees if you go back far enough.
TigressDem
(5,126 posts)The thing is, ALL human DNA has little defects or just less desirable traits here and there.
BUT when your DNA and another person's DNA is different enough, there is a more likely result of selecting the strongest traits of each.
The more similar the DNA, the less of a choice available and lesser traits or even defects are what is available.
Think of dog breeding and how eventually how certain breeds started having hip issues or breathing problems being passed down.
wnylib
(26,012 posts)inbreeding allows existing defects to flourish within a family. There is less genetic diversity so the same genes keep reproducing.
Some defects are recessive, so if only one parent has the defective gene, the children will either not get it, or get only one copy of it so the defect will not manifest. But, people who are related might each have one copy of the recessive defective gene. Their children could have one recessive defective gene and one dominant "normal" gene, or two dominant genes, or two recessive genes. The chances of having at least one recessive defective gene are greater when both parents have it. The chances of getting two recessive defective genes are also increased when both parents have one. The child who inherits both recessive genes will have the defect.
So inbreeding increases the continuance of an undesirable gene and the chances of manifesting the defect if a child gets two of those genes. The defect will flourish in families that are inbred.

The recent story about the dog (puppy) experimentation lab is downright sickening. Romney caught all manner of hell for the vacation story about lashing the family dog to the top of his station wagon.
This, however, is 1000x worse by underscoring a core cruelty factor, a lack of sensitivity regarding other living creatures in a mad pursuit of product and profit.
That is really going to turn voters off bc if we have one thing in common? Americans love their pets.
