(11,642 posts)Reagan has been lionized for terrible reasons. Bidens legislation will help improve the lives of Americans for many years to come.

A President who declares that "government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem" did not have a government legislative agenda, other than to dismantle our government by cutting revenues through tax breaks for the rich, dismantling our governments energy and environmental efforts, removing protection for American workers by legislation and policies that destroyed labor unions and incarcerated millions of minorities for low level drug offenses. So this is a popularity as expressed by the people post. Take this Reagan library signing "ceremonies" list and ask yourself this question, what legislation offered by Reagan and opposed by Democrats, benefited the majority of Americans? Also, ask yourself if this antigovernment, fascists' had not been born, would we have had January 6th. Your up.

(5,448 posts)The country was in a recession, and stagflation with its terribly high inflation rates was just coming under control. Reagan's popularity soared as soon as the economy improved later in 1983-- he claimed he created an "economic miracle" with Reaganomics, but the reality was that stagflation was tamed by the Fed under Paul Volcker- his very hawkish monetary policy-- he raised the federal fund rate and consequentially interest rates to near 20% that pushed the economy into a deep recession with high unemployment. It took Volcker 4 years back then from 1979-1983, before he relaxed the Fed's policies allowing the economy to take off . Volcker really should get credit for the economic miracle, because as he relaxed te Fed's policies the economy soared. Ironically, Carter appointed Volcker knowing it would cost him in the short term. Perhaps it should have been called Carter's economic miracle.
The Fed understands the economy better now, and should be able to create a softer landing. As soon as inflation recedes sometime next year, Biden can declare his own economic miracle and his popularity will soar.
