Could his apparent blunder against a determined populace be the undoing of his brutal reign? The stories now emerging indicate significant displeasure in his decision making.

It is becoming more apparent day by day that Putin’s days as the undisputed leader may be numbered. If, in fact we actually witness this downfall, I would view this as the ultimate irony, and a gut punch to the ribs of TFG.

One can only hope.

at this point in time. And, frankly - that is the game I'd be playing too. Who is silly enough to be poking the wounded (but far, far from dead) bear? Only those with a penchant towards masochism. Odds are pretty good you're not going to see this man deposed in months - and more than likely in years. Russia will be weakened, yes. Putin's blundering overreach makes that unavoidable. But they're not going to disappear, like a genie in a bottle. And I'm highly doubtful that he will either.

but the Russia mindset is rooted in WWII - huge losses then total war. Unlike Afghanistan, the narrative here is that Russia is fighting the Nazis again.

I've always admired DU, despite being partisan, open to opposing views to a point. But as of late, it resembles message boards I used to visit praising the invasion of Iraq.

So...I'll get flamed for this, no surprise.

If Ukraine went West, that would have been the demise of Putin. You may be wracking your head about that, which only explains the lack of understanding of what is going on here. The fact he did act, insures his right to rule.

Granted this isn't what everyone wants to hear on DU, but it doesn't make me wrong. And you are free to disagree, but, I sadly think I will be proven right.
