If Donald Trump thought that his hagiography of Queen Elizabeth published on his Truth Social website and the Daily Mail in the days after her death would secure him an invite to her funeral, he will be disappointed.For it has been revealed that Trump, who is believed to have been angling for an invite, will not after all receive an invitation to attend the queen’s funeral on Monday next week in London. --snip--

In a departure from tradition, former U.S. presidents will not be invited to attend the funeral. Instead, the honor will be extended only to current heads of state, and their spouses or partners, apparently due to pressure on space.

Trump was seen by some as making a clear pitch to get an invite when he wrote on Truth Social that meeting the queen was “the most extraordinary honor of my life.”

The article also goes into the complex interplay to get all the intended leadership there. A request to fly commercial, no helicopters, even asking leaders to be transported on a shuttle bus. The Brits are working hard to get Pacific leaders (and islanders) there. Sounds very complicated...

Kennedy's funeral. I was only 14 at the time. I remember the NBC narrator identifying heads of state as they arrived, like Charles de Gaulle, Emperor Haile Salassie, etc. But I can't remember if any former heads of state were there, or if anyone from another nation who was not a head of state was there. Except - I think that the Soviets sent a representative in place of Khruschev.

who will want to attend and 2. the sticky wicket of excluding Trump.

Apparently, this is how the Brits have decided to deal with both, but they have to stick with the current leadership and their plus one only; otherwise, it would be a diplomatic slap if other former Presidents received a 'personal" invitation --and lay open the previous reasoning as a lie.
