He Called 911 Because His Car Was Stuck. The Cops Killed Him.
Police originally said that the 22-year-old man was shot and killed while attempting to stab officers. New body camera footage seems to show otherwise.

Body-camera footage shows Colorado police shot and killed a young man who had called 911 for help after getting his car stuck on a dirt road, despite him never leaving his vehicle's driver seat.
Christian Glass, 22, was killed on June 1 by a Clear Creek County Sheriffs Office deputy during a mental health crisis, his parents said. He had called 911 after getting his SUV stuck and was hoping for assistance getting it pushed out. But over the course of the next hour, the responding officers threatened him, tased him, shot him with beanbags, and finally shot and killed him.
Glass family has retained lawyers to help fight for justice for their son. The lawyers, Siddhartha Rathod and Qusair Mohamedbhai, provided VICE News with several angles of the body-camera footage showing the shooting and a statement saying, from beginning to end, the officers escalated and proactively initiated force.
There was no need to threaten him with force; to draw guns; to break his car window; to fire beanbag rounds from a close distance; to tase him; to shoot him dead, the lawyers wrote. From beginning to end, the officers on the scene acted unconscionably and inhumanely.

(106,201 posts)Someone tase his ass, an officer is heard saying in the video. Someone tase him! An officer shoots Glass with a taser through the passenger window and the young man begins to scream and shake while holding the knife. One officer tells Glass he can still save himself if he drops the knife. Glass begins to yell Lord, hear me. As he flails around in the seat once more, an officer fires his handgun five times.
He was clearly mentally disturbed, but presented a threat to no-one else, and probably not to himself. The police escalated the violence, and expected him to be able to think "oh, they've hurt me enough now, I better drop the knife" when they could see he was unable to think straight. Gross incompetence at the very least.

You can hear the distinctive clicking of the taser start for the second time as he begins to move erratically when they shoot him.

(4,575 posts)An autopsy showed that Glass died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds, including five in his torso. The manner of death, in my opinion, is homicide, the pathologist wrote.
Glass mother, Sally Glass, said her son was petrified and paralyzed by fear the night he was killed.
I have a hole in my heart, and it will be there until the day I die, she said.
The familys attorney, Siddhartha Rathod of the Denver-based Rathod Mohamedbhi, said that Glass was clearly in a crisis.
Christian was experiencing a crisis, and he called 911 for help, said Rathod, and yet these officers busted out Christians window, shot him six times with beanbag rounds, tased him multiple times from two Tasers, and then shot him five times.

Hundreds marched on parliament on Saturday demanding justice for Kaba, who was a drill rapper from south London.
Deborah Coles, executive director at the charity Inquest, which has been working alongside Kabas family and legal team, called on the new Met commissioner to act quickly, saying: One of Mark Rowleys first priorities should be to ensure that the officer who shot Chris Kaba has no contact with the public until the criminal investigation into his or her behaviour has concluded.
She added: The new commissioner should be in no doubt about the strength of feeling about this shooting. This is not an isolated case, but one of a shamefully long pattern of deaths of black men who have died following the use of lethal force. There is an endemic culture of delay, denial and defensiveness after state-related deaths.
The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, welcomed Mondays decision. My thoughts remain with Chris Kabas loved ones at this intensely difficult time as the IOPC continue their independent homicide investigation, he said.

Why didn't they take him up on the offer to throw out the "weapons". Wait I think I know the answer to that.
Unfortunately cops have an absolute right to order you out of your vehicle for any reason. Refusal gives them the opportunity to go hands on. You have the Republican Supreme Court to thank for that decision.

This entire situation is resolved simply and easily by pushing him back on to the road. It would take a matter of two minutes and he would be on his way.
Instead they created a deadly situation from out of thin air.

The state police were correct but obviously these criminal police knew it would be better to escalate the situation so they could kill him in cold blood. Might cost everyone some money, doubt the rich will want to pay. This way untrained cops can call the trained meds in the field, driving their own ambulance to the scene. I have no idea why were not doing this. We did it for awhile in Tampa Florida in the 1990s, but Im unsure they have this response anymore. Worked for us,
Would save life, and taxpayers money. Its not like were not aware what works, I guess most areas just dont care.

In addition, as I worked in mental health in the community I ran into police who were quite well trained in handling mental health incidents. AND, many who were not. It is possible, but deescalating in mental health is pretty much the complete opposite of the way police are trained to deal with the average criminal, so they have to want to learn and it takes a bit of maturity.

The "weapons" (geology tools) wouldn't have even scared the tow truck driver, most likely. He might say something rude like, "Boy, you done messed up your suspension but good!", but the young man would still be alive today.

(15,526 posts)... was the same officer who was the first to point his gun at the young man after a knife was seen in his lap, repeatedly mentioned "cross fire" concerns to other officers (indicating that shooting the young man was also in his thoughts repeatedly) even early in the encounter, busted out the front passenger window, fired the beanbags, fired the taser... and ultimately fired several bullets into the murder victim.
Then he tried to justify the shooting by claiming that the victim lunged at police officer "Williams" with a knife. Williams was the older officer on the driver's side of the car, who had previously tried to keep the victim calm, and both windows on the driver's side were still rolled up when the killer-cop tried to excuse his deadly actions in regard to the knife. The victim never left the driver's seat or opened the vehicle at all!

His name is Deputy Andrew Benjamin Buen, from Arvada CO. 29 years old, received his law enforcement academy certificate (without honors) in Fall 2020 from Red Rocks Community College: https://www.rrcc.edu/sites/default/files/Commencement_2021.pdf

I knew I was getting a never should have had a badge and gun vibe from Officer Buen.
Buckeye_Democrat
(15,526 posts)If you watch Buen's 70+ minute body cam video of the encounter with Glass, which I shared earlier in this thread, I think he was involved in every threatening action or decision that was made that night!
I believe he's the same guy who suggested another cop stand on the vehicle's hood too.
Why they often seemed to defer to Buen, who completed community college police training less than two years ago, is beyond me! Even the older gray-haired cop that they called "Chief", who was very calm and comforting with Glass, seemed too prone to Buen's suggestion to break the passenger-side window. The older cop seemed hesitant, like he wanted to think about it some more, but then Deputy Buen volunteered to break the glass himself! Of course!
Someone like Buen should NEVER be a police officer anywhere, and he deserves prison-time!
If Glass had EVER exited the vehicle with the knife, I'd still be saddened if he was shot to death, but I'd probably also think he posed a danger at that point. Even if he ran away from the cops with the knife, the shooting might still be justified because he could possibly stab a stranger in his disturbed mental state. But for crying out loud, he never left the driver's seat! Of a completely immobilized vehicle that was apparently out of gas too! (Per the words of the "Chief" as he was talking to Glass.)
The dispatcher seemed like a sweetheart, but it also would've helped if she had explained to the cops that Glass was terrified of "skin walkers" in that area and he didn't want to leave the vehicle for that reason.

It's not enough to just get rid of the qualified immunity. These killer cops need to be prosecuted.
Now today I'm reading that Denver Police mismanaged taxpayer money meant for mental health support. I don't know. Maybe we should just burn the whole thing to the ground and start over again at this point.
Denver Police mismanaged taxpayer money meant for mental health support
According to city audit report, DPD and the Department of Public Safety paid a nonprofit late, misspent some of the money and failed to spend the rest in time. The Department of Public Safety says the report doesnt take into account challenges brought by the pandemic and understaffing.

(4,575 posts)She finally decided to sue them after finding out they withheld information from her. She initially asked for calm after his murder. I wonder if she regrets that now. In that case it took them almost a year to even release the cop's name. By then he was securely ensconced elsewhere in another job and location. The DA investigated the cops and decided not to bring charges.
I think they are in good hands. I'm sure both of them would rather have their kids alive.

(15,526 posts)I HOPE the lawyers keep it simple. Pursue Buen primarily. If they get a criminal conviction of him, which SHOULD happen because that guy committed murder without any real justification at all, then they can spread the net even wider if they want.
Don't go to trial with this kind of attitude toward their entire police force:
