(68,201 posts)I'm not sure Kamala is our best shot, tho. I like her myself but she has doubters from her past role in CA. Nut sure why, though (other than she is a woman, of course, the usual)...
OLDMDDEM
(3,186 posts)I like Kamala, but I do not think she would win as a presidential candidate.

(2,957 posts)Nor I. She hasn't shown me enough 'presidential charisma' so far. But the VP position isn't really a training ground to be the President.

(32,321 posts)since the 2022 election is the most important election for our democracy. One election at a time.

(6,154 posts)Newsome definitely has presidential ambitions with the way he's been trolling Abbott and DeSantis.
Not sure about Newsome's appeal nationally. He's said some things in the past that made me cringe.
But then, who knew Obama would have the national appeal he did when he first came on the scene.

(6,154 posts)My point is that Newsome would not be well received in many swing states in the east and Midwest.
My opinion only and please let me be wrong should he decide to run and win the nomination.

(11,419 posts)I plan to vote for him again this November, but I think he brings too much baggage with him (including having been married to Kimberley Guillifoyle or however she spells her name).

Joe Biden is on such a roll now that even CNN and Fox are having difficulties saying the opposite.
Yes, it will all come to a crashing end. MAYBE. Any maybe not. He has shown himself to be pretty nimble on the chessboard of DC politics, dancing rings around Republicans 10, 20, 30, and 40 years younger than he is. "Sleepy Joe" wasn't sleeping. Like a sly predator, he was keeping the slits of eyes open, waiting for the right moment to strike.
And keeping Mayor Pete at the ready to politely (and thus, devastatingly) demolish Republican lies and stupidities, what a brilliant move!
If Biden runs again, and if Harris wants to stay on as VP, it's hers. If (and ONLY if) she wants to do something else, I think Buttigieg has shown that he is every bit as sly as Joe Biden, and he is a VERY fast learner. The Republican God Squad will go nuts, but they'd go nuts if the Democrats nominated Tommy Tuberville. Write them off.

(2,957 posts)He comes across as sincere and sensical, as Obama always did for me. And I can't think of anyone else at the moment who is better suited. But, and I don't really know how progressive he is, it may be too much for some?
I don't have any argument with progressive politics, just believe moderate Democrats are more electable. If the country was 75-80% progressive, it might work but it ain't.
Biden was the only candidate who could beat Trump but both of 'em will be too old in 2024 IMO.

(100,133 posts)Looking at the criticisms in this thread, I say Id rather keep him here.

(6,267 posts)Too many stories of his breaking Covid rules, and the pics of him with Guilfoyle are just creepy. Glad hes creatively dissing DeSantis, but I dont see his good character as much as I see his ambition.

(108,783 posts)But that wouldn't stop me from voting for him. He'd mop the floor with Desantis!

(6,267 posts)And how they presented themselves was revealing. I trust we will have a better candidate. We have to win in this election first, though. All together.

(100,133 posts)If not, you and the other several critics seem remarkably unaware of what the guv is trying to get done here. And Im curious to know what your sources are.
Meanwhile, he may have ambitions, but we are in the midterm election cycle, Joe Biden is going great guns, and it really irks me that there are Democrats eager to declare him a lame duck already. That doesnt even make sense.
Easterncedar
(6,267 posts)Biden is getting great things done, and all this 2024 speculation is premature and, I think, divisive.

(6,154 posts)It was when Kerry was running against Bush. Newsome said some stupid assed comment about gun control and the Republicans turned it into an effective talking point. I happened to agree with what he said, but if was absolutely the wrong thing to say at the wrong time.
He might be a smarter politician now, but all those stupid statements from the past come back to haunt you in a national election.
Hekate
(100,133 posts)calguy
(6,154 posts)It's the fact that all the stupid things he said years ago will always be there and will used to paint him as an extreme, out of touch liberal should he appear on a national ballot.
It's just that much more unnecessary baggage we don't want to contend with in a close national election.

(79,052 posts)if President Biden does not run again. If he doesn't, Newsom might be the best bet to beat DeeSantis.
Demsrule86
(71,542 posts)to lose that. And Newsome is governor of a deep blue state so he has not dealt with divided government and would not win the rust-belt IMHO which means we lose.
CTyankee
(68,201 posts)question. OF COURSE, we are supporting our president if he chooses to run again! And I mean vigorously!
Demsrule86
(71,542 posts)which we will not win a presidential election. There is no other path. Pres. Obama chose Biden to be his VP in part because of Biden's relationship with the Midwest with unions and with Pennsylvania in particular. And Biden delivered. He is in good health so far and I fully expect him to run in 2024. No matter what Newsom is not the right candidate for 24. I like Newsom and I hope there will come a time when he could win but it won't happen 24.

(7,350 posts)...and could utterly defeat DeSantis. However, I think he's planning on taking Diane Feinstein's seat in the Senate. She hasn't been active and pretty much just warming the seat. I thought she would retire the last time, but I wonder if Newsom told her to keep the seat until he was ready.
Add to that, the recall blew up in the GOP's faces. They were obviously trying to block him from any further ambitions, he's like their worst nightmare, personality and charm of Reagan, but a Democrat. Instead, he got more votes for him in the recall than he did in the regular election. As a result even legit challengers are not planning to run against him in the next election.
Also, elections tend to be cyclical, he may be waiting for the right moment to bounce in. VP's don't usually have a good track record for winning or keeping the higher office. They are the perfect people to step in should a tragedy occur, but as far as electability, not so much.

(55,334 posts)And I like his moxie. And I'd obviously vote for him in November.
But there's a sitting president who says he's running for re-election. And there are more than a couple of other potential candidates I would favor over Gavin, at least in my initial thoughts. I would like Corey Booker to get back in there in 2024. I thought Jay Inslee brought a lot of gravitas and didn't get a fair listen 3 years ago. I think Gretchen Whitmer has an odd non-politician kind of appeal.
With all due respect to my coastal co-partisans, my bias would run to a candidate from a purple state, someone who could swing the critical Great Lakes states into the blue column. But I want to fighter, who is strongly supportive rebuilding the labor movement, committed to Green policies, and who is young enough to charge up those iffy under-30 voters who always make the difference in successful Democratic years.
I want a new FDR. I want a younger Sherrod Brown.
