(21,615 posts)I saw him speak in GA. It was a big deal & a lot of secret service screening just to get into the outdoor venue.
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)that was going to have Dick Thornburgh, Reagan's Attorney General speak at a meeting. The Secret Service wanted the Social Security numbers of everyone who was going to be in the room 30 days in advance, among other information. They stipulated there had to be a door leading to the outside of the building directly behind his podium. There was a car outside that door with the engine running the entire time he was there.
They told us the heightened security was because the Columbian drug cartels had just made public a hit list and he was on it.

(35,152 posts)He was on a campaign stop at a nearby shopping
center in Dallas, and my dad took me and a couple
of younger kids over there to see him speak on
a little bandwagon.
It was fun.

(96,882 posts)Event was a DNC fundraiser (I'm a member of their National Finance Committee). There was a photo line with the President, where I had a chance to chat about our awkward first meeting...forty years ago (I blocked him from entering a DNC midterm conference in 1982 because I didn't know who he was).
Biden spoke extemporaneously for about an hour. The big message was about the upcoming elections and the implications for our future ("the next two years will decide the next twenty"
and the world implications therein ("when I met world leaders, I said 'the US is back', and the response was "for how long?"
. If Republicans win, "'I'll be spending all my time with a veto pen." but there won't be a lot of initiatives moving forward.
He went through a litany of issues, including guns ("I'm gonna ban assault rifles"
, the DISCLOSE act (requiring dark money groups to disclose donors who give $10,000 or more during an election cycle), climate change ("an existential issue"
, abortion and contraceptive access (he's instructed DOJ to protect rights -- such as the ability to cross state lines for Plan B and procedures) LGBTQ rights, etc.
He also got into a extended discussion with someone in the crowd with a cancer research foundation. He's endeavoring to provide money through the moonshot program, but raised the concern that the separate foundations are unwilling to share information with each other ("everyone looks in the mirror and sees a Nobel Prize..."
.

(179,870 posts)I got to meet President Biden at two different fundraisers in 2019 back when he was short of money. Both fundraisers were at the homes/condos of two different attorneys. Joe is a great speaker at these events. I brought three floor speech signs from his speech at the 2016 national convention that President Biden signed at the first fundraiser. President Biden took my iPhone and snapped three great selfie pictures in the time it would take me to do one. At the second fundraiser, I got to discuss stuttering with President Biden and I got a Biden hug after we discussed that we both tend to stutter when we are tired.
Joe Biden is an amazing person. There is nothing fake about him.
My kids have decided that I need better frames for the signed floor speech signs.
