There's a Shortage of Moderna Covid Boosters in the US

(Bloomberg) -- Some pharmacies are reporting shortages of Moderna Inc.’s new bivalent booster shot for Covid-19 as one factory used in producing the vaccine remains offline following a safety inspection.

The US government supply of Moderna’s shot is currently limited, causing appointments for the product to vary across the country, a Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. pharmacy spokesperson said in an emailed statement. Meanwhile, CVS Health Corp. says some of its drugstores have used all of the updated shots they received from the government, and the company is trying to get more doses.

Moderna has been coping without one of its vaccine-manufacturing facilities, which hasn’t been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to make the new booster shots. The FDA said in a statement Tuesday it recently inspected a Catalent Inc. facility that contracted with Moderna to produce its shots.

Moderna tapped Catalent in June 2020 to fill and package its Covid vaccine at a Bloomington, Indiana, site. The FDA said that it would release some batches of Moderna’s vaccine made at the Catalent facility “following a careful review of information provided by Moderna about the manufacture of these batches.” The FDA hasn’t released any information on what inspectors found during the inspection.

I made an appointment to get my Moderna booster. I was told Nov. 28th was the earliest they could do.

Mrs unblock even had an appointment specifically for the Moderna version. They told her they had run out several days earlier, but they didn't bother to tell anyone until tgey were actually in with the nurse.

That place didn't do Pfizer so she had to make another appointment elsewhere.

No one around here seems to have the Moderna shot.

like to get my third booster soon. I think they have the Pfizer, but all my Covid vaccines have been Moderna and I would like to stay with that one. I can wait til October...but November 28th seems way too long!

Did Pfizer for the original 2 shots, but went with Moderna for the first booster*, and then jumped on an appointment for the Moderna bivalent booster about a week after they became available (would have taken whichever was available, but did verify it was the bivalent before they administered it). Got my flu shot in the other arm while I was at it.

*Note: Not an expert, but the side effects (fatigue, chills) from my first booster suggested that the antibodies raised by the Pfizer original vaccine must have had activity against the Moderna booster. Consistent with what one would expect if they're targeting the same virus in the first place, I imagine.

I suppose, however, that most of the clinical studies have been performed to look at homo-boosting, so that might be a reason for preferring to stick with the same manufacturer.

We lucked out. We had to do a lot of digging to find it around where I live (NYS).

I got my 5th Pfizer last week.

But no doubt it's different depending on where you are. The side effects were same as Pfizer: fatigue, sore arm, achy. A tylenol or Advil knocks out the pain. Not so much the fatigue. I have been taking a sick day the next day after each vaccine so I can just rest. By the end of the next day I'm back to 100%.

EDIT: all my primary shots and two boosters were Pfizer. This time I decided to go with Moderna since it was available. Moderna is supposedly a little stronger.

I just made an appointment for Friday afternoon, but it was not nearly as widely available as the previous 2 boosters I scheduled…my husband will be getting the Pfizer booster, hope it’s easier to locate.

However there is only one pharmacy chain in my area that had them, walgreens formerly duane reade. I am a bit concerned that although they told me it was the new moderna bivalent, it does not say bivalent on the new vaccine card she had to give me because there was no space left on my first card. I was planning to call to make sure, but then got swamped with other pressing matters.

In addition, the student who told me they were exposed to covid and missed class due to covid at the workplace emailed me before class and said they were on the way but had 101.2 fever but didn't want to miss more classes and had numerous negative tests. Who comes to class with 101.2 fever? I did not read the email until 2 hours into the class and replied do not come to class with a fever and until you have recovered. Fortunately they did not attend.

I have told students for many years before covid, do not come to class if you are ill with anything, ever. You will be excused from class. If you feel ill in class let me know and you will be excused and leave class. And I still get people coming in sneezing and coughing all over everyone. I had one student come in to class after being in the hospital on dialysis with a kidney infection with blood vessels burst in her eyes, she was very weak. I told her to go home immediately and rest which she thanked me for. Another professor had terrorized her into not being able to miss classes even though she was obviously very ill.

This country is crazy period on so many levels. My county is now on high level covid alert. I just hope my brother gets his booster because he didn't get it yet even with me nagging him to. I was worried there would be shortages so I called right away to make an appointment since I was eligible.
