Vladimir Putins special military operation against Ukraine hit a turning point Wednesdaybut not the kind the Kremlin wanted.
Instead, the Russian leader may have inadvertently put the final nail in the coffin of his decades-long reign with his bombshell announcement that hundreds of thousands of citizens will be called up to face likely death in the war next door.
While Putins most loyal allies rallied around the leader with calls for unity and defense officials stretched over backwards to provide dubious assurances to the general public, ordinary Russians rushed for the exits and took to the streets.
Airline tickets out of the country sold out within a matter of hours. There were myriad reports of men of conscription age being barred from buying bus and airline tickets, and human rights groups reported that draft notices were already being handed out to people at bus stations and train stops in some areas.
Street cleaners and homeowners associations were reportedly tasked with delivering the notices in other areas.

Armies need truck drivers to deliver supplies. They need mechanically inclined people to repair vehicles and other equipment. They need doctors and nurses to staff field hospitals. These are all roles that can be staffed by middle-aged personnel.

(40,399 posts)"Even when they pissed me off, I had to admit there was something I liked about the draftees who didn't want to be there and made no bones about it. I like draftees in general, even with the attendant problems. Historically draftees have kept the military on the straight and narrow. By calling a spade a spade, they keep it clean. Without their "careers" to think about, they can't be easily bullied or intimidated as Regulars; their presence prevents the elitism that otherwise might allow a Regular army to become isolated from the values of the country it serves. Draftees are not concerned for the reputation of their employer, the Army (in Vietnam they happily blew the whistle an everything from phony valor awards to the secret bombings of Laos and Cambodia); a draftee, citizens' army, so much a part of the history of America, is an essential part of a healthy democracy, one in which everyone pays the price of admission." - Colonel Hackworth, About Face

with its attendant poverty-draft did not strike me as a great idea either.
Col. Hackworth states clearly and knowledgeably what I only intuited: the non-draftee military system becomes separated/isolated from the lives and values of the country it serves.
TY for this, Brother Buzz.

(3,846 posts)I'm sure Putin's plan to invade was in place while a turd who walks as a man does was in the White House. Putin also probably assumed that same turd would still be in the White House in 2022. Had Putin any smarts at all, he'd have called it off as soon as Biden took office.
Either that, or he assumed the US would be too divided to give a shit about Ukraine regardless of who the president is.
Bad assumptions all around.

(26,395 posts)will continue to suffer, as they have been doing for this ignorant war that I'm sure none of them wanted. It's the Vietnam that Russians didn't want, but sadly, it's come home to roost in their own backyards, thanks to the ignorant dictator. I predict that this is the start (or that it has already started) an uprising of the common masses against this thug who seems to think he knows it all.

But maybe that one doesn't count because they were still part of the USSR then.

(13,003 posts)Cheney & Rumsfeld employed Halliburton and other private contractors to fill all the many non combat jobs in Iraq.
They knew to get support for their war, they couldn't re-instill the draft. Even Colin Powell wouldn't have gone for that.....
Also, they couldn't carve off a chunk of the money from soldiers, but could gleam all kinds of kickbacks from private contractors.
In addition Cheney wanted to repay his former employer massively for their employing him for so long......
Trump will win the award, along with Jared and his spawn for Top All Time Grifter, but Cheney and Rumsfeld weren't bad at it either.
Rumsfeld decided we should stockpile Cipro for a possible anthrax biological attack. He bought millions of stock in the drug company that is the sole manufacturer of the drug a few days prior. After the announcement, the drug company stock doubled or tripled in price and he immediately cashed out. Not bad work, if you can find it......

(5,254 posts)At the beginning of WW II, we knew trouble was brewing, and we began a draft here long before Pearl Harbor.
Its clear we are seeing the possibility of wider war in the future. We need to start talking about setting up a draft here, and cranking up all production militarily. Im serious that we need to take this all much more seriously.
