Got called an "idiot" twice today.

It won't be the first time and invariably won't be the last but I was accosted by an elderly Romney voter outside a CVS pharmacy this morning as my elderly aunt and I were leaving.

The gentleman tried to give me a propaganda page on Romney. I handed it back saying, "No thanks." He started yelling at me, "But have you read it?" I answered that I wasn't interested in reading propaganda sheets about Romney. He said, "But he's created millions of jobs" at which point I answered, "Yeah, in China! But we need jobs here." That was the first "You're an idiot" response. I replied, "Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I'm an idiot. It just means I disagree with you." He said something like, "Well, you called this propaganda and it's not propaganda." I said, "I do 3-4 hours of research on this stuff everyday and I know propaganda when I see it." At which point he tried to give me the sheet again, trying to assert that Romney had created "millions of jobs." At that point I said that Romney was a vulture capitalist and he's actually outsourced American jobs. That's when I got my second, "You're an idiot." Of course, it begged the response: "That's hardly an effective way to influence people to vote for your candidate."

I feel I've done my patriotic duty for today.

LeTaz , don't get discouraged . we live in AZ , in a heavily republican retirement community . On the back of our car , we have 4 Obama magnets . We have gotten a few fingers , but we have also gotten some positive responses . Today , after we had left the grocery store , some e had left a little card on our windshield : you are not alone ! Also in the store , someone pointed to my Obama button and said : I like that . Made our day .
I just wish more people here would have the courage to display some Obama signs , to counter all the Romney ones . There is strength in numbers !

I wanted so much to be able to make calls but... AND I OWN THIS...I regard Romney supporters with such utter disdain that I am unable to mask it. I am not speaking to most of my family till after the election for exactly this reason. Its not an attractive trait and I am not proud of it.

1) You have a choice as to what your reaction will be. Choose calm.
2) Not only is a calm response better for your blood pressure it has the added benefit of pissing off your opponent at which point he/she will generally engage in the give-me-enough-rope ritual. Besides, it's amusing as hell.

in lots of situations, especially when someone who is waiting on me (store clerk, DMV person, you get the idea) is being rude. It's amazingly effective I've learned. I often thank someone profusely when they are simply doing their job.

But when it comes to political stuff, I am totally intolerant and I quickly get incoherent with rage. I very much admire people who can calmly refute the bullshit.

I find when you take them on in say, their "Daily Caller," you soon will be denied access . get me around those people, it turns into a sport. I become like a bull dog and don't back down. Let me just say----you never give up, and you never get angry. Never treat them like the idiots you might think they are.

She said Friday she had decided to vote for Romney. I calmly asked her why she had decided that was the right way to go, we had a lot of discussion, I sympathized with her concerns, and I gave her factual information. Today, she told me that she had changed her mind and will be re-electing Obama so he can finish the work he has started....and is succeeding with.

You have to show her the truth about those talking points.

They are so light on facts and figures to support their silly and uninformed notions. But the sad thing is that if you try to tell them otherwise, they believe YOU are the one that is deluded or misled. Unfortunately, all that birther crap and "he's not one of us" fed into a belief system they had and wanted someone to verify it. Their racism is lurking just below the surfact....just far enough away from their conscious mind that they will DENY, DENY, DENY that they are racist, even a little bit.

They are ripe for the picking by the likes of Hannity and others on Fox. No critical thinking skills, few facts and a desire for their prejudice to be reinforced. They are like sitting ducks. And they vote based on all that crap they are fed.

A really sad thing that is not mentioned here very often is that many of these people get their opinions from their church. I find that to be one of the most appalling and sad things I ever heard, but it is true. Many churches have abandoned the stuff I learned when I was growing up in the Methodist Church. I have since abandoned a LOT of that stuff, too, but NOT the part about being thy brother's keeper. Or taking care of the sick, the elderly and children. And how about just loving thy neighbor as thyself. A simple but effective rule for making the world a better place. All gone for many of them. Sad.....because they think this is how is it supposed to be. Dog eat dog....I got mine, you need to get your own. What an awful way to see the world.

I had some people "volunteering" for a republican in my district knock on my door Saturday afternoon, before they got 3 words into their spiel, I pointed to my "I voted" sticker, she smiled and said thanks, to which I replied, straight Dem ticket.
Needless to say, the smile vanished rather quickly.

She is a former neighbor who used to routinely yell at her young children so loudly that neighbors three doors down could hear her. She and her husband used to have fights that were even louder. He had a mistress; she looked the other way.

She kicked one cat out on the street because he was black and "freaky". I got him vetted and found him a home.

They had four dogs, two on chains for several years and all exposed to the elements whether hot, cold, rain or shine. Animal control down here doesn't do much. Several neighbors called.

A couple of years ago, just before they moved to a lush, new subdivision, she finally relinquished ownership of the dogs to me. One dog had run away (or they had done something with her; we only know she was no longer around) before this happened. So, I was left with three, sick and starving dogs with their bones sticking out. One died literally upon arrival at the vet's office. Luckily, I have a great vet who I have an established relationship with, and she knew I'd been trying to help these dogs for some time.

The second dog was actually pretty healthy because she was the alpha and ate all of the sparse amounts of food that they were given. This one was adopted by a vet tech's relative and is doing great in her new home. I got her spayed and vetted before her adoption.

The last one was so frail that if she ate more than a bite of anything, she would throw it up. We spent three days and nights giving her about an inch worth of grilled chicken every 30 minutes - anything more and she lost it all. Slowly but surely, she improved. Finally, she was improved enough to go through heartworm treatment. It was successful.

Today, she is a healthy, happy, goofy little girl who lives with me. She will never be cold or hungry again, and she will never, ever be on a chain again.

So...if I'm a "demon-crat", that's fine with me. As long as I am the complete and utter OPPOSITE of what this woman is, I'm fine with that label.

These types literally make my skin crawl. They are too stupid to even know they are stupid.

Thanks for taking care of those dogs. I cant' understand how anyone can treat people and animals like that and yet they consider themselves to be Christians. Someone shot one of my Mom's dogs 2 nights ago. She figured out where it had happened. Well, it was in the area of the ditch between her Obama signs and the road. Were they shooting at the signs or the dog? I don't know but 10 to 1 they were a winger. Bloodhound/lab mix will be ok per big vet bill.

Yes, we know that we live by love and that should overcome any names that they can come up with- just like Taz Knows Taz is by no means an idiot. Peace and love

Glad the dog will survive, and I hope the assholes who did it get bit big time by karma. The wingers are the worst as far as I am concerned. They have no empathy for human beings, much less four legged creatures.

Oh, and the neighbor which I referred to just posted on Facebook about how she was in line to vote this morning with a t-shirt on that reads "Vote the Bible", and she was getting "dirty looks".

I guess it takes all kinds to make the world go 'round, but I sure could do without the ones with attitudes like this!

And for your efforts with these animals.

The modern evangelical churches are full of these people today. Its because of this slow but unchecked slide from believing that everyone and every creature are God's creations and are equally valuable. Its now changed to - he who has the most $ is the most blessed by God. This shift has meant that the church is now available as a sanctuary not for the dispossessed, but for the vile sociopaths and mean spirited people who have trampled others on their way up the ladder and now the church not only does not condemn their behavior, but welcomes them in and praises it...as long as they are "blessed" with success. They go to get their reprehensible behavior sanctioned by God, and with this new attitude in the modern day Christian church...that's what happens. So they feel righteous and justified in their cruelty.

Now days I play along and ask if I can have 2 or 3 dozen of their handouts so that I can pass them out at a neighborhood meeting. Yep, I trash them too, after I get home. My strategy is that the more of that garbage I can dispose of the less likely they can contaminate some unknowing persons with it.

One thing election-related here that was kind of cute, though-- I showed my absentee ballot to some of my students. One little girl, about 11 or 12 years old, asked where Obama's name was. I showed her, and then she marked a little "X" with her finger in the space by his name.

First, thank you for being the one to get me to stop lurking and join in. Second, for being someone who can remain calm when dealing with a rightwinger. Your post started a thread that made me not only laugh and cry but gave me some good advice from those of you in this community who are wise enough to not let your emotions feed into the conversation when your dealing with someone who has been brainwashed (yes, I said it-brainwashed).

My brothers have been brainwashed and they are educated men. My half sis and step sis have been brainwashed by the church and foxentertainment. I cannot even have a conversation with them anymore because they argue they way mitt debates. They ignore whatever fact you have given them and go off on a tirade of lies and propaganda - so much that you can't possibly refute it all -to the point of getting flustered. ( a reason I've stay away from politics on facebook for the most part) I can understand why President Obama was thrown off somewhat in that first debate(still think he won it)It's overwhelming sometimes and I tend to lean toward being a little hot-headed so I refrain mostly.Thank you DU community for giving me a place to find-SANITY peace and love

96. Isn't this a strange country today?
Tue Nov 6, 2012, 02:03 AM
Nov 2012

I was noticing this when W was ruining our country from the White House for eight years.....rove and his thugs have managed to turn things totally upside down and backwards. "Support the Troops" means let them die for nothing...maybe oil? "A traitor" means you have three Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star...some folks might call "a hero". "Enhanced Interrogation"...or what is commonly known to the rest of the civilized and uncivilized world as "torture".

These despicable thugs have managed to play "word games" with us. "You're a great American"....often spoke by sean vannity and his callers, back and forth to each other, as though it really means something; when in fact sean vannity is probably the most seditious of ALL the reich wing talk show hosts today, and he should be brought up and tried for treason as such. I don't mind someone having a differing opinion; but I do mind someone lying out right, beating the drums of hate and ignorance to the point that his whole 3 hrs daily on the radio and 1 hr daily on fox-propaganda network is to tear this country apart.

We are suffering from a cancer in this country...and rove and fox and the stooges that run the repukkke neocon/fascist party today are dragging this country into near civil war again. There are going to be a LOT of angry and upset people, no matter who gets elected tomorrow. If Obama were to lose...we all KNOW it will be because of cheating.

Tue Nov 6, 2012, 08:46 AM
Nov 2012

People throw around words and terms and have NO clue about their seriousness or meaning. The cavalier use of "treason" is a perfect example.

I posted here a few weeks ago that one morning when I was out for a run I saw a sign that said "Prosecute Hussein Obama for high treason."

Never thought I'd see a sign like that. Ever. I still see it when I'm out and it sickens and disgusts me.

(And of course, we all know what that "high treason" is: Being the first African-American president of the United States.)

If Romney wins, we are headed for some very, very dark days because a lot of people will see his win as a validation of all the hate that's been percolating under the surface for a very long time now toward those who are seen as being "less American" than the rabid right (which is practically all of us).

But getting called an "idiot" twice by the same person only counts for 1.5 (because he already thought your were an idiot, and simply said it again). Whether I'm in the US or here in Korea. We have lots of churches who set up tables and try to hand out stuff. Last week I got into a quasi-argument with a woman in the park near where I live who spoke English. I flat out told her I disagree with people who push religion. I sat there and argued with her until she got sick of me and gave up.

When the Democrats Abroad were doing voter registration in 2008 we had foreigners who supported the Libertarian candidate come and throw their literature on our table. We turned around and threw it in the garbage.
