It looks so good on paper - not the idea of a national religion, but the notion of the teachings of Christ influencing the actions of politicians who claim to be his true followers.
If Christ's own words held any sway with those who pretend to adhere to them, the homeless would all be sheltered, the sick would all be cared for, the hungry would all be fed, and every stranger would be welcomed at the border with open arms.
The obvious problem here is that the self-proclaimed followers of the Nazarene are the same people who openly despise everything he said, everything he preached, and everything he stood for.
The legendary myth of the anti-Christ - a person or group of people determined to undermine the true tenets of Christianity - is now up-and-running in the Republican party. And their cries for establishing a "Christian Nation" have nothing to do with Jesus, but have everything to do with convenient political pretense.
When Republican politicians start feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, et cetera, I'll credit them for their "Christianity". But I'm not holding my breath waiting for the GOP to acknowledge that their idea of being Christ's disciples isn't about being thy brother's keeper, but about fucking your fellow citizens for thirty pieces of silver - while supplies last.

Now Jesus is suing DeSatan and the one who can save Florida is Crist. What a world.

Btw, in 1790, Washington spoke at a long established Jewish temple in Rhode Island and made it crystal clear that the US was not a Christian nation, as that sort of talk caused millenia of death and destruction throughout Europe.

Is that what Christians would do?
WWJD?
Throw Bible verses at them that relate.

The radical right has been trying to negate that one for a long time, but they don't have much of a leg to stand on if they are going to start calling the founding fathers godless traitors.

(36,927 posts)At that time the idea of separation of church and state was a radical concept. European nations received their authority to govern from the church, not the people. The trap people fall into is the idea the religion is always a benevolent force for good or even should be any of those things often quoting some religious text as to what they should be doing. Meanwhile history has conclusively shown religion has always been a tool used to placate and control the masses while enriching those who wield that power. Trying to use religion to try to defeat someone who uses religion for nefarious purposes inevitably fails. If an incurious and obviously immoral clown like the orange dipshit can use religion to his benefit, why would anyone think more religion is the answer to that problem? Religion requires the suspension of reason. The attempt to combine those two things is doomed to fail. Instead we should be exposing organized religion for what it is, and how its used.

(55,377 posts)1. Make this nation a Christian Nation in more than name only.
2. Pass legislation based on the tenets of the New Testament. Penalties for blasphemy and stuff. Maybe jail and floggings. Biblical executions (e.g., throwing rocks).
3. And since these RWNJs consider TFG to be Jesus, Parte II, "He" makes the law for all of us.
4. Trying to reverse a switch to Christian Totalitarianism will be near impossible. (I often consider the Founding Fathers to be a fluke. They had to have had to deal with their own version of colonial RWNJs.)

(1,766 posts)You can bet that we'll all have to pay tithes to "a" flocker church. Will any tithe cheats get executed for failure to pay what is "promised," a la Ananias and Sapphira?
Red letters are pretty clear about being against divorce, so it would have to go. That will put a big dent in evangelical love lives, given that they have the highest divorce rates in the nation.
And then there's that bringing a sword thing for anyone who refuses to follow the religion. It will start with families having to shun any relatives who won't do that. Of course, what to do with the shunned? Gee--let's try concentration camps and executions. Why wait for hell to do the job, when you can do it in the here and now?
There's that line about jots and tittles and the laws always being the laws, which will make all the pesky OT laws enforceable. Time to marry your rapists, rural women, or to win an honor killing if you're in a city!
And slavery is back on the menu, too! Never mind how it will kill the tourism industry, since it's okay to enslave foreigners, even those just visiting. It's a small price to pay to be right with the guy in the sky.
People should be really careful what they ask for with wanting a nation following this religion. They just might get it.
