(25,862 posts)cat 3 by the time it struck New Orleans. NO was vulnerable because it is delta marsh that is under sea level with buildings on top. Levees did not hold up.
Florida is marshy in many areas, but is not a low lying bowl for trapping water like happened in NO.
But, it will be very bad for FL coastal regions, bays, and inlets. The surge will be like a tsunami.
I heard on NPR that Tampa Bay waters have lowered, like happens before a tsunami wave hits. People are being warned not to go onto exposed Bay land to see it because the waters will surge back.

(53,153 posts)Why, exactly, do the owners of these vessels not put the plywood over their house windows, fill their boats with diesel and head for Norfolk at flank speed? It gets the boat out of danger AND it gets your family out of danger. Your house is probably fucked whether you are there or not, and getting the yacht out of the storm path at least gives you a place to stay after you get back until you can return the home to habitability.

People thinking the will just ride it out could be in for quite the wild ride. Ill never understand the people that dont evacuate when told to. They will probably regret it dearly.
Lets hope for the best possible outcome, but it may not be enough.

The only one with a basement around here is Trump at MAGA-lara.
Those alerts are loud. We heard them across the house.

(19,382 posts)I certainly dont have a basement neither do any of my neighbors and were in a big 2500 home development. As far as the loud announcement, it is definitely a nuisance but it gets everybodys attention.

(3,093 posts)The next most secure location would be a bathroom. You think it is silly for them to tell you to go to the basement? Imagine them telling you to go to the bathroom.
Stay safe.

See if you can offer to take in some of those who will not be able to return for a while as we did during Katrina as far north as NYS.
Thanks Mal for your energy in following and updating the storm.
And forecast to come ashore just south of me. Power just blinked out for a few seconds, back on now.
But for not too long I imagine.
All the hatches have been battened down so its just a waiting game now.

And though I know it's a bigger storm than normal, does the eye of a hurricane grow in relation to the actual size of its parent, or is there a size limit to how big an eye can get?

(15,420 posts)More interesting in ideology than actually governing.
They have refused to address the flood insurance issue down there. The result - most insurance companies that provided flood insurance have left the state, and the few that are left are engaged in massive price gouging. Many of the people down there don't even have flood insurance coverage because they can't afford it.
And in the meantime DeSantis is getting asylum seekers who came here legally and flying them to Martha's Vinyard. Why in the heck do that? Just plain hate, that's why.
Now there is going to be billions in damage, a bunch of people will die, and we will all have to chip in to send US tax dollars down to Florida in the form of aid.
Honestly, I would like to see DeSantis in an orange jumpsuit behind bars.

(17,802 posts)Going from a cat 1 to a cat 5 (or a couple mph close to) with adverse conditions like wind shear and dry air wrapping in, all in a day or two, isn't what we are used to.
Of course the water is 89 degrees (~ 5 degrees higher than usual). So climate change is hitting the overdrive.
This isn't your grandfathers hurricane - literally.

(17,802 posts)But this storm is hitting faster, harder, and stronger than even they forecast a day ago.
Hurricanes are hard to forecast, but usually the 24 hour view is pretty good. 5 days out, not so much.
What is really frosting their noodle is the speed of the eye replacement cycle that occurred over night. The reformed eye is now larger than many hurricanes.
This isn't normal, even by maria's standards.
malaise
(295,661 posts)Maria originated from a well-defined tropical wave that departed the west coast of Africaon 12 September. The system moved westward over the tropical Atlantic for the next few days while producing scattered and disorganized deep convection. By 15 September, showers and
thunderstorms increased and began to show signs of organization, with some curved cloud bands developing. Deep convection then quickly became more consolidated and better organized, and it is estimated that a tropical depression formed about 580 n mi east of Barbados by 1200 UTC
16 September. The best track chart of the tropical cyclones path is given in Fig. 1, with the ind and pressure histories shown in Figs. 2 and 3, respectively. The best track positions and intensities are listed in Table 12.
Moving westward to the south of a mid-level high pressure area, the cyclone strengthened into a tropical storm around 1800 UTC on 16 September. Maria turned toward the west-northwest shortly thereafter, and quickly intensified into a hurricane by 1800 UTC on 17 September. While situated in an environment of warm sea surface temperatures and light vertical shear, the
hurricane strengthened extremely rapidly. Maria became a 100-kt major hurricane by 1200 UTC18 September, and just 1 h later, as it neared Dominica, it became a category 5 hurricane with maximum winds of 145 kt. The hurricane made landfall on the island with that intensity and an
estimated minimum central pressure of 922 mb around 0115 UTC 19 September.
