The Nordstream pipeline sabotage.

Last edited Thu Sep 29, 2022, 11:47 AM - Edit history (1)

Conventional wisdom lays this at Putin's feet. But I don't see what it buys him. It removes his leverage. He could stop and start it at will, depending on what the Europeans do regarding Ukraine.

Am I missing something?

Logically, it doesn't make much sense for Putin/Russia to do it. But few countries have the capabilities to do so. Of course, Putin may no longer be thinking logically...

It’s about more than Nord Stream. All underwater infrastructure is potentially at risk. Nothing to prevent sleeper drones from hitting other pipelines, data cables, you name it. It’s Vlad saying “see what we can do” to try and crack the Euros.

He did it. Plain as day.

4. Germany could've used parts of the pipeline infrastructure to switch to LNG. Guess which parts ...

... of the pipeline were blown up?!

Yep, the places Germany was going to tap into it to send LNG to itself and the rest of Europe and in 3 different places which doesn't spell natural explosion at all.

This was Russia, they want to slow down Germanies gargantuan switch to LNG because Putrid thought he had Europe by the minerals when it came to gas this winter at least ... he doesn't.

IINM Germany can still make its needs without a floating LNG station and IMHO would be safer to keep it land based seeing Russia wants to blow stuff up in the sea.

I got into it with cultists on Twitter who said it was Biden or CIA or….wait for it…ANTIFA. Seriously.

But, that aside, yes something is being missed in the OP and the thread.

Putin is not the only person in Russia.

Quite a few Russians make quite a bit of money in the energy business, and have an interest in keeping the gas flowing.

If Putin wants to shut it off, then blowing it up ends the debate within Russia.

What’s weird is this pipeline wasn’t yet active. So what’s the point?

They've been signalling all along that they wish to disrupt the current world order and extract maximum pain on Europe. And restricting flows with the "under maintenance" and "undelivered equipment" veneer was wearing very thin. This is a permanent solution and no more need to trot out the lame excuses they've been using. In Putin's mind, Europe is no longer a viable market, why keep up the pretense? It also signals that the boogeyman can disrupt other pipelines, such as the Norwegian line.
