(19,704 posts)that make CA's prices higher than most of the US?
It still sucks, but there are apparently reasons for this.

(11,419 posts)yeah, yeah, I know California has its own rules for gasoline composition and formulae, but I'm getting tired of people complaining about how expensive their $3/gal gas is back east.

(15,578 posts)From $3.08 to $3.14, Im thinking theres a lag between the cost of a barrel of crude and the price we pay at the pump. Dropping $0.26 overnight was a very pleasant surprise.

(5,913 posts)Many states tax gas on the theories it will encourage lower automotive pollution and to fund road maintenance in a way that reflects the usage, so in theory heavier cars use more fuel and pay more for the higher road wear and tare. And it is especially varied this year as some states have suspended their own gas taxes through either November or December. Again this is a regressive tax which is bad on everyone but the most rich. A better solution would be having the funding come from a graduated income tax or at least refunding the gas taxes in a graduated progressive way, so a rich person driving a huge SUV wouldn't get the refund.

Also all of it goes to general social welfare, roads and bridges.

Around 3 dollars a gallon in much of the rest of the country but inching up to 7 bucks in California. Something's up.
Even with the Cali refinery requirements, that much differentiation in prices doesn't make sense. Before the huge supply shortage/inflation uptick, prices in California were never that much higher than the rest of the nation.

(15,402 posts)And their prices are cheaper.
Here in San Diego, we have historically had higher gas prices than anywhere in SoCal because we only have around a dozen independent gas stations. All the other stations are company owned and franchised, so the gas stations themselves have no flexibility on pricing. They charge what the distributor tells them to charge.
So prices are manipulated by neighborhoods, and the franchisee makes their money on the mini-store attached to the pumps.
My thinking is that the distributors are passing on this Spring's high prices on to the consumer. While over the Spring, they charged higher prices in anticipation of the purchase price they were going to pay for the gas. They're double charging us. And of course, they decided to shutter half the West Coast refineries at one time for 'maintenance ', instead of shutting them down in a staggered rotation.

(17,377 posts)what I'm paying here in coastal Oregon. Especially since most of those states vote red and also receive more federal funding per federal tax dollar paid than the rest of us. I wonder if the same is true for groceries? As the primary grocery shopper in my household, I can say that grocery prices have gone up probably 50% overall since the Ukraine war and Fed rates started going up.
Have to wonder how much of this is manipulated to keep the MAGAts in red states on the side of run-amok capitalism.

(10,969 posts)Apparently, we don't get our oil from pipelines because of the Rockies. Our fuel has to be shipped to us, and that's why our prices are typically higher.
Most of our country's refining capacity is near the Gulf and southern states. The Eastern states are riddled with pipelines. That's why Texas prices are always significantly lower than other places. Taxes also play a role. California also has its special formulation fun, which requires us to import more of our gasoline than other states.
Mix in local regulations, restrictions, and taxes, and you can find noticeable variations even on a county level. It all adds up.
So, we're basically hosed. Just how it is.

By me, $3.13. More central Northern NJ.
FakeNoose
(41,634 posts)Everything else is identical. And yet New Jersey prices are consistently lower across the board.
In Pennsylvania part of the gasoline tax goes to road maintenance costs, but in New Jersey the tolls cover most of that. Also the degree of governmental grifting is a bit higher in PA.

(43,165 posts)Just got my property tax statement: $16,837.
If you make less than a quarter of a million a year, you can get a rebate of
$1500, so that would make mine $15,337.

Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)but every time I've been there I bet I paid more in tolls than I did for gas. It's rare to pay tolls in California unless you cross a bridge.
Retrograde
(11,419 posts)CalTrans has been putting in toll lanes on some freeways in the Bay Area, with surge pricing: I've seen one near me go from $6 to the next exit at rush hour to $1 mid day.
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)I lived in Silicon Valley from '61 to '91. But that kind of toll is a little different, because you can still use the road without paying it, but it will just take longer. Same incentive as carpooling or having a zero emissions vehicle to use the carpool lane. Just selling the time savings for cash instead.

(3,708 posts)I'm not fine with gouging, however.
Mr.Bill
(24,906 posts)Depending on what locality you are in that can be close to 10%. And that's on top of the other taxes on the gas. So it's a tax on a tax partly. And it's per dollar, not per gallon. So when the price goes up, the state makes out. That's all well and good, as long as they use the money for what it's supposed to be used for. I took a 150 mile drive west to east across the state a few days ago, wine country to gold country. It's a trip I make frequently to visit relatives. I have never seen so much road construction going on, and it is much needed.
