Young women are more likely to identify as liberal now than at any time in the past two decades, a trend that puts them squarely at odds with young men.
Forty-four percent of young women counted themselves liberal in 2021, compared to 25 percent of young men, according to Gallup Poll data analyzed by the Survey Center on American Life. The gender gap is the largest recorded in 24 years of polling. The finding culminates years of rising liberalism among women ages 18 to 29, without any increase among their male peers.
Several societal forces have conspired to push young women to the left in recent years, including the #MeToo movement, former President Trump, rising LGBTQ identification and, most recently, abortion policy. Slower-cooking trends in marital status and educational attainment have also nudged the needle.
_____
The rift between young men and women may widen further. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a precedent that had protected abortion as a constitutional right for nearly half a century. The ruling has energized young women. New survey data, released this week, shows that 61 percent of young women consider abortion a critical issue, compared with 36 percent of all Americans.
I would always choose a candidate thats pro-abortion, said Rose Merjos, 21, a government major at Wesleyan University in Connecticut who is an avowed liberal. Almost everyone either knows someone who has had an abortion or has had one themselves. This is something everyone can relate to.

Kudos to the women who turned down these a-holes.

(15,624 posts)I'd like to think that indicates that more women are choosing not to have children with morons, but of course there's no way to know that.

(10,481 posts)Online grooming from sources like 4chan, 8chan. Also online gaming (which is where I was targeted during the late 2000s) no surprise if one young man has a bad experience with one woman. They turn into hateful lil shits that resent everything.
But I went from young liberal man into mature liberal woman. So I'm happy I never fell for the horseshit.
But with the Andrew Tates, Walsh's, Shapiro's of the world. They'll continue to groom these boys into hateful lil nazis

These guys are all bitter and hateful towards women because most women dont want to date these sorts of guys - and they cant seem to figure out why. If youre a guy in your mid 40s whose overweight, works a low income job, doesnt have a college degree, and are generally an asshole, women probably arent going to be attracted to you.

There has to be ethnic/racial break downs for this to be taken seriously. We already know a large majority of white men lean right and have for years. We also know white women in the low 50 percentile voted for trump in 2020. How much has that changed if at all, or the liberal trend they say they see is made up of Black women, progressive white women, Asian American women, LBGTQ+ women, Latina and other POC women?

(1,654 posts)women these days over the right to abortion and bodily autonomy but now that the reality is setting in about how much this really reaches out to so many facets of our lives, people are less reluctant to talk about it now, but for a while even using the term abortion seemed to turn off a lot of younger women than I. Of course so many of them don't remember pre-Roe and it never occurred to many of them that an established right could be taken away, although I remember very well. Having lived through the 50s and 60s as a young woman we always knew we had to be careful, but now it's even harsher now with these new laws. In those days if you had a miscarriage, it was a miscarriage. When I had one with my first pregnancy as far as I know nobody questioned if it was spontaneous.
Now there are drugs that can't be prescribed to females of child-bearing age. Doctors and emergency rooms are afraid to practice evidence based medicine. Of course, we have gotten used to insurance companies coming between us and our doctors, but now we have the state and every busybody who thinks they have a right to be concerned over every fertilized egg having more rights than the woman missing a period. I have 2 smart granddaughters, 1 in college, 1 in high school. The future is limited for them. There will be jobs denied to them because of their sex, going back 50 years because it might damage the fetus.
Now I'm fairly sure a number of women participating in polls are not going to admit to this being the number one reason to vote Dem, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is even the number 2 reason or number 3 reason for voting Dem. Having taken surveys you kind of hold back and not want to tell everything that's on your mind. I know I've had a lot of disappointments in the American public in the past 5 years, but I'm hoping that the younger people are awake enough to be aware of what they may be losing if we don't vote like it's a presidential year.

(23,187 posts)Namely, that young men are shifting to the right. It doesn't say that, but it is easy to misread it to believe that young men are trending conservative as opposed to young women who are trending liberal. Buried a few paragraphs into the article it states "The share of men who identify as liberal has held fairly steady for almost 25 years, according to annual Gallup surveys."
Of course the younger women are correct and I wish younger men were keeping pace with them, but at least it seems they are no more conservative now than they have been for decades, and young people as a whole are trending liberal.
