(2,010 posts)I think many towns, especially here in the south, would have similar reactions, but the number of comments and threats seems excessive. Again, kkk headquarters town so even worse.
I agree, it was pretty disgusting and very disturbing.
I'm surprised the police didn't make an appearance to harass him.

Unless the lawsuit was heard by a mostly white jury.
ALL of Arkansas is awful. (My hubs' racist g-parents lived there.)
However, there seems to be some hope for a fraction of younger white ppl.
Edited to add:
However, they did elect BILL CLINTON.

Even if the man w sign was brought up anti racist he'd probably be seen that way just for having those views.

(1,211 posts)I have heard stories of black lives not being respected, not mattering.
The stories are from about 1940 or so.
Those stories help me understand why it needs to be said, "black lives matter".
People that say, "all lives matter" need to connect with this deeper meaning.

Then again, they could be like, the old time Jebus freaks, all peace and love, ya know like..."we all matter, peace and brotherhood!"
Then again, maybe not...they could just be parroting FOX hosts.

(1,211 posts)When I first heard it, and spoke with a republican, I said "hmmm that is strange, all lives matter".
And I was thinking that maybe it should be, "black lives matter too".
But then, with a little reflection, I was able to understand the deeper meaning.
Unfortunately, even though it should be obvious, it needs to be said that black lives matter.

It's fuckin Arkansas.
It's a wonder BILL CLINTON ever was elected there...but proof a good politician can work wonders, even in a racist state.

Basically they are trash and the older ones probably go to a baptist church and claim their love of everyone.
I have family just like those folks here in east Texas.
I am ashamed of them all.

I lived for awhile in east Texas many years ago for a short time. I know just the people you are talking about. When I left, I swore I'd never set foot in the state again. I'd hoped a lot of the south had improved, but I'm having some serious doubts.

(90,021 posts)Every Friday at 5, a scrappy little group of un Indivisibles get together at a busy local corner and hold up signs. Right now, its all campaign signs for our candidates.
Lots of traffic, and many drivers honk approval and/or wave to us as they go by. But last Friday, some passenger in a big rig hollered a big loud growls FUCK YOU! at us as the truck rolled by. That was a first.
For some reason, they do like to show off how rude and blinderd they are.

Horrible area, that unfortunately you have to drive through to get anywhere approximating "good." Major highway crossroads run through there. When we have to drive through, we make sure we get fuel and drinks, etc., in the counties next to Harrison and refuse to spend a dime *in* Harrison.

(53,214 posts)I was curious so I Googled Harrison, Arkansas:
What is it like to live in Harrison Arkansas?
Recognized as one of the most unique small communities in the country, Harrison, Arkansas is an ideal place to start a business or enjoy retirement. A healthy economy and moderate cost of living mean that those looking for a place to "Have It All" need to look no further than Harrison.
And this:
Is Harrison Arkansas a good place to live?
Harrison Reviews:
Lots of great people here. The public schools are very good, especially for being a "small town in Arkansas." Harrison is generally pretty safe. There is good healthcare with the hospital.
I guess they inadvertently omitted "If you're white"!
Oh wait, if you go further, there is this question and answer:
What is the racial makeup of Harrison Arkansas?
White: 94.13% Two or more races: 3.99% Asian: 1.10% Native American: 0.69%
That is out of a population of a little over 13,000

(53,214 posts)about southern style racism. The mindless hate terrifies me.
I lived a short while in the south years ago and the bigotry and narrow-minded attitudes was unnerving. I was very young, so it was quite a culture shock for me - Confederate flags, "The South will rise again", "Whites only", and portraits of Jefferson Davis in the schools. I came from the Land of Lincoln, so it was unsettling to hear that Lincoln was consider a tyrant and a traitor.

(59,522 posts)the majority in southern states.
And I am a woman, a single issue voter, and that issue is abortion.
But I do have to point out that equating slavery and lack of access to abortion is not a good thing to do.
There's no such thing as partial enslavement.
Warpy
(114,615 posts)although they used indentured servants who took seven years to work off the price of their passage and if they survived it, were free.
Even that fell out of favor when ships got larger and transport was more economical, waves of immigrants coming in who required no up front cash outlay and could be paid below subsistence with impunity. A lot of great fortunes were made on the backs of underpaid immigrant labor in the northeast. I'm not letting them off the hook for the past.
These days, things are different, and it's only women who are being enslaved, often by the states that clung to the horrific institution of buying and selling other human beings. I'm referring to the states with antiwoman "trigger laws" that went into effect when the USSC made its worst ruling since Dred Scott. Arkansas is one of those states. Sorry, won't live there, even though at my age I am extremely unlikely to need abortion services. It's the overall attitude toward women as the natural slaves of men I can't abide.
You want to live there, be my guest.

(59,522 posts)and lots of them - for 200 years. When Africans were emancipated in NY in 1827, about 5000 were freed, and by then the numbers were smaller than they had been previously.
Large numbers of Native Americans were enslaved in New England starting with the Pequot War in 1637 (where basically all Pequot who survived the war were enslaved), continuing with Metacom's War in 1675 and going through till about 1700. This enslavement of New England Natives is a really forgotten part of our history, and it should not be forgotten.
In 1700, the cost of African slaves was coming down and there were more of them because they were being imported at a furious pace and were reproducing once they got here. At that point, Africans became more attractive than Native Americans as slaves because there was always a danger that a Native American would run away to relatives. Most male Native American slaves taken during that period from 1637 to 1700 were sold south to the sugar plantations, a thousand miles from their homes.
Slavery wasn't abolished in Massachusetts till the late 1780s. So that was a good hundred and fifty years from the first appearance of African slaves in New England. And the fact was that there was almost no industry that the New England merchants engaged in that wasn't heavily dependent on slavery in one way or another right up till the Civil War.
In Maine, there was a group of 100 Scottish slaves, of all things, who were captured in the 1650s in the English Civil War and shipped to Maine to work in timber plantations. They were not indentures, they were sold as actual slaves. But because they were white, they married white women and their children were born free. Most were able to buy their freedom within a space of about 20 years because their owners did not own the fruits of the labors of their wives and children, so they were able to get the money to do so. The plantations were the Maxwell and Andrus plantations around York, I think, and there is still a town there called, "Scotland."

(2,715 posts)They support bullies because they are scared not to. They will become the next to be bullied if they don't. They constantly live in the worst bullied classroom you ever had in school.
When you say "Black live Matter," since they have taken to heart that no lives really matter, they hear that "Black live matter more than their lives." Sad but these racists live in constant fear of their white brethren. They know that if they show compassion it will be called weakness and they will lose their family, friends and community. Their church will reject them. Out of fear, the ones that don't want to hurt them will avoid them.
They know that they will lose everything if they show an ounce of compassion. They are bullied, and live in a network of bullies.
Of course they hate the white that shows courage. That man is dangerous. There are consequences if they smile at him. In their confused mindset, they wish they could be him, hate him, want him to just go away. He upsets the apple cart.
Since these areas are predominately managed by people who show that they are bullies, you can be certain that justice for anyone who isn't pale, does not measure up in these areas.
They are sad pitiful beings. Brainwashed by mechanisms that have haunted man since the dawn of time.

The Buffalo River in Arkansas is as a wonderful of a float/canoe trip as you can find but the people around the
river still think the wrong side won the civil war and the hate and stupidity is so ingrained in their souls
that for some only death alone will cause it to be stilled. I remember in more then one place being asked

BTW almost all of them are SEC or NFL fans too.
BTW part 2 these are Trump's base who watch Fox News and listen to hate talk radio 24/7.
BTW part 3 much of rural PA, W.V., OH, and KY have people who are just like those in Arkansas.
