(8,387 posts)Assuming that the award survives recission and appeal, he will then file for bankruptcy, and the house will be within the Texas homestead exemption.
If you owe people a lot of money, you move to Texas.
So, yeah, you picked the one thing he is definitely not losing.

(8,387 posts)Plus, in Texas, his wages are exempt, and you can bet that he has a pretty good deal with his present and future employers, which he runs.
On top of that, Texas has unlimited exemptions for his retirement accounts, some of which permit loans.

(5,335 posts)People moving from CA to TX are finding they pay more total tax in TX because of property taxes.
Unless youre in the top 1% of course:

(8,387 posts)I'm not sure where the pictured house is located, but there is no state real property tax. I agree that in some counties and municipalities it can be higher than in others.
But, for the same reason, you can't lose the house by not paying the tax.

(5,335 posts)Which states have a statewide property tax?
I live in CT and I pay more in property tax to my town than I pay income tax to the state.
Ilsa
(64,569 posts)Instead of having a progressive income tax, they hit every homeowner. When I moved to Georgia from Tx, my real estate taxes remained the same, even though my new lot was bigger, and the house went from 1600 sq ft to 3100 square feet. Texas also has a higher sales tax, although unprepared food is exempt.
Effete Snob
(8,387 posts)But the state of Texas does not. So, it depends on where one is located.
https://comptroller.texas.gov/taxes/property-tax/
Texas has no state property tax. The Comptroller's office does not collect property tax or set tax rates.
Some places are low and, yes, some places are quite high.

(61,033 posts)but this is a well-deserved lulu. Well done, jury members as Jones made multi-millions yearly for pushing blatant and obvious lies.
There were dead children and adults for God's sake. Those bodies weren't crisis actors. Either Jones is crazy and believes his denials of reality, or he thought a day of reckoning was never going to come for him.

(17,757 posts)That means he will have a lot of debt to work off. If I was a billion in debt, I would be broke....
After his personal property has been liquidated, the judge should only let him keep an income at the rate of minimum wage, with the rest of anything he made going to the families. He may end up having to sell that homestead to pay for a used mobile home, on the wrong side of the tracks.
If he was left with nothing, homeless, penniless and friendless, it still wouldn't pay for what the evil bastard did.

(33,424 posts)I don't care if the award was a trillion dollars. Courts don't take homes, primary cars or leave a person broke. It is considered against public policy and they don't do it.

Although Texas law allows residents to choose the federal bankruptcy exemptions, Texas bankruptcy exemptions are among the most generous in the country and it is rare for a debtor not to utilize their protections.
For example, the Texas homestead exemption allows debtors to protect an unlimited amount of value in their home provided the property does not exceed 10 acres in a city town or village or 100 acres elsewhere.

(8,387 posts)He was born in Dallas and has lived in Texas his entire life.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Jones
Jones was born on February 11, 1974,[41][42] in Dallas, Texas, and was raised in the suburb of Rockwall.
Jones began his career in Austin working on a live, call-in format public-access cable television program.[54] In 1996, Jones switched to radio, hosting a show named The Final Edition on KJFK (98.9 FM).
Moving there when getting sued is not a good approach, since 40 months residence is required for the homestead exemption.
