Even Cavuto and the other guest were laughing. The responses are pretty funny.

(12,485 posts)Fast food prices are outrageous.
A Big Mac meal at my local SoCal restaurants is around $13 after tax... and a Nacho Bellgrande and Diet Coke at Taco Bell is $10...

(16,006 posts)Course the grocery stores will start giving out loan applications before you walk in the door shortly. Its incredible how expensive groceries have gotten. I shutter to think about what its gonna be like in 20 years.

(12,485 posts)But I clearly remember in the late 90's I'd order the McDonalds Quarter Pounder with Cheese meal... it was around $4

(33,643 posts)You just had to get in your little order slip before 9am to the office.
Quarter Pounder with Cheese and small fries, delivered to the cafeteria at lunch for you ... was about US$1.20.
Tasted exactly the same as it did at home in the US.
Good times right there for a middle-schooler

(12,485 posts)When I worked at McDonalds in 81-ish I remember the cheeseburgers were like 89 cents and hamburgers like 79 cents.
My Mom would probably say 39 cents, lol...
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)These prices were lower than they were in the USA at the time, and that's why I remember it so well.
Suffice to say ... shit ain't like that there anymore. It's not Tokyo bad (which was BANK even back then), but it's definitely caught up a lot since 40 years ago.

(12,485 posts)Late 90's... Westerners were still fairly uncommon outside of Moscow and St Petersburg...
The hotel had a money changing booth and I'd exchange like 100-200 at a time... first afternoon I go out to lunch with a colleague. It was a really nice Cafe, had snacks, a lunch dish, tea and pastry... got the bill and paid. Calculated it in my head and it was like $18 for two people.
It was like Monopoly money.
Fast forward 20 years later and Moscow is more expensive than NYC...
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)Around 13,000 USD/month, I just looked.
I was a kid and my stepdad's company was paying so I don't know how much it was then. No doubt relatively expensive, but not like this.
It's 3bd/3bath and 1.8K sq. feet. View and neighborhood are awesome though, and Hong Kong International School (where a high % of US expats go to school in HK) is about 1 mile away, so ...
Value meals in the late 90s were $3.99 ($4.99 for double quarter pounder meal).
Source: Worked for McD's when I was 15, and we were allowed a $3.99 meal on our break ($4.99 if it was an eight hour shift).
I'm still salty they got rid of the Arch Deluxe. I used to eat those all the time. It wasn't anything super special, but it had like this black peppercorn bacon and mustard-mayo on it. So good.

(4,674 posts)or early 90s, a Burger King near me on the CA coast had a special that lasted a couple of years: Whopper for 99 cents. I wasnt much of a fast food eater but that $ucked me in!

(24,334 posts)When McDonald's opened near our house when I was a kid, hamburgers were .15, fries were .12 and drinks were 5, 10, or 15 cents. And that's about all there was on the menu, except maybe cheeseburgers. Can't remember what those cost. This was around 1962.

(24,334 posts)That was during a gas war, usual price was .29. When I got my first car in '69 it was .39.
The worst thing so far about getting old is remembering how cheap everything was. I just have to keep reminding myself when I got that first car I was making 1.65 an hour.

(65,227 posts)I subbed last Thursday at a school that let's out later than most. 25 minutes to get home, so I decided to just stop at BK.
2 Whoppers, a Fish, and 2 small onion rings was about $25 for my wife & i.
At least I had half a Whopper for lunch at school on Fri.
Still, it wasn't $28 for one person.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)Small onion rings are I think $2.29.
I also get coupons where I can get 2 Original Chix Sandwiches and 2 Small Fries for $5.99.
C'mon down to AZ, man ... it's fucking fast food paradise

(65,227 posts)For some reason, it was not on their sign last week.
I wonder if this franchise dumped that promotion.
Because I expected that, I was anticipating a much lower price. That's why I remember being sticker shocked.

I can't imagine trying to consume 28 bucks worth of that stuff after looking at the online menu. Seriously, taco's are 2 bucks average, and even those huge looking burritos are only 7 bucks.

(32,729 posts)I did cheat one day and went to Taco Bell and got a bean burrito for less than $2.00. Always keep a bottle of my home tap water in the car. 2.69 for a wet drink?

(5,525 posts)No doubt that in some places it's the only game in town, but if you're in a burgh of any size, you can find a good mom-and-pop place that serves up decent Tex-Mex.

(2,253 posts)-personally, i prefer Del Taco.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)It's basically a Big Mac but w/o the middle bun piece. They're surprisingly tasty considering it's supposedly a taco joint. Their fries aren't as good as McD's though.
I generally prefer a Del Taco to a Taco Bell taco, but for some reason, I occasionally want one from the Bell. Reminds me of childhood, pretty much tastes the same as it did when I was 10 yo.
And can I take this opportunity to proclaim my dismay that Jack in the Box no longer sells the Monster Taco? The regular ones are just not nearly as good.
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)is those greasy Jack In The Box tacos. She's from upstate New York, and for a lot of people on the east coast in the 60s, those tacos were the first taco they ever had, so they are somewhat nostalgic about them. My first taco was in 1961 at an excellent Mexican taco joint in San Jose, Ca.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)Taco Bell one's followed shortly thereafter.
The Monster Taco was way better though. A lot higher 'meat' to tortilla ratio and it seemed like they were better tortilla's too.
But alas, they are no more.
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)Mainly, though I make my own tacos.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)I pretty much only get Taco Supreme's and Steak Soft Taco's (which also ain't bad) at the Bell, about 2X a year.
Grilled Stuffed Steak Burrito's used to be pretty good too, but again ... long gone.
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)(I'm not Mexican) When you cook the groung beef, don't fry it, boil it. It removes most of the grease from the meat. Strain it after boiling then add the seasoning.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)and then put it in the colander and gave it a quick rinse, for that exact reason.
Then I put back in the pan, add spices and a bit more water and simmer for a bit, usually about 20 mins. Also ... canned green chilies

Mr. Retrograde and I do volunteer work one morning a week, and afterwards we like to go out for lunch. Sometimes if it's a particularly hard and long morning we'll stop and pick up something to take home. Last week it was Taco Bell: lunch for 2 was less than $15, but we stick with the basics and drink water at home. I suppose you could load up with extras and drinks, but that's a lot of food. (Yes, there are better taquerias in the neighborhood: those are for times we want food instead of fuel)

Baked Potatoes are another example. Chives also work but are largely the same thing.
I also need them in my Hot and Sour Soup, absolutely.

(9,126 posts)I don't consider it Mexican. When I want Mexican, I have two really good taquerias I go to. But Taco Bell is amazing in the same way White Castle is amazing. When you want it, you want it.
That said, I only go once every two months or so. While you can build up an expensive order if you really work for it, I can't imagine where $28 is going. The combos run about $8-$12. I prefer the Cravings menu. Get like two of the beefy melt burritos for $2.49 each and you're set. (And if people want to know about inflation, these were like $1.29 less than a year ago)
I never understand the poop jokes about it, though. Y'all need Fiber Jesus in your lives.

(3,260 posts)Getting fried chicken delivered is a terrible idea for precisely that reason. Soggy fried chicken is an affront to God and man, and an insult to the poor chicken's ghost.
