For those who watched January 6 hearing today:

In "Manchurian Candidate," late Angela Lansbury's character speaks of "rallying a nation of television viewers to hysteria, to sweep us up into the White House with powers that will make martial law seem like anarchy."

1. Lansbury was great in that role.

Well deserved Oscar.

and Ms. Lansbury was fantastic in her role.

At the time, she was only three years older than Laurence Harvey, the actor playing her "son" in the movie.

In any other year, she probably would have won the supporting actress Oscar, but 1962's slate was unusually strong: Thelma Ritter for Birdman of Alcatraz, Mary Badham (Scout) in To Kill a Mockingbird, Shirley Knight from Sweet Bird of Youth and, the winner: Patty Duke as Helen Keller in The Miracle Worker.

That was an unusually tough year for Best Supporting Actress.

8. The early 60's were a great time for the film industry.

One of my favorites from the era - Hud, is an underrated masterpiece.

It's reminiscent of the situation in The Graduate, where Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson, was actually only 6 years older than Dustin Hoffman.

The Sixties and Seventies were great decades for movies and music...I miss them.

To my eyes, the man in the center (behind Lansbury) bears a creepy resemblance to Mike Lee (R Utah). Hmmmm.....

4. Scary movie, but I remember thinking, "It can't happen here..." What a dope I was.

I was in college when I first saw this in a film class in 1974, and it stuck with me. Angela Lansbury was chilling in it and I remember obsessing over the dress she wore in this scene. I still love it.

to the dangers facing us. I wonder if he feels like he's howling at windmills.
