(8,387 posts)...since a lot of failure modes of jet engines result in an explosion of some kind.
It looks like the pilot got out:

If a plane is hit with a weapon of some kind, such as a missile, the explosion of the weapon will often injure the pilot rendering him or her unable to eject, in contrast to an engine blowout which may evolve over a period of several seconds allowing a reaction of some kind.
