October photo contest finals! 72 hours to vote. Pick the winners!
The theme for October is: Tools
Every day, we use numerous tools or devices to accomplish tasks. These can be as simple and primitive as a branch and rock being used as a lever and fulcrum. Or as complex as the state of the art cell phone or laptop. Nature is awe inspiring in the breadth and depth of beauty and wonder. But technological implements, old or new, working or now broken or rusted, have a beauty of their own. The image doesn't have to depict the entire object. It can be a set of gears of a clock, the number pad on a keyboard, a hammer, or a quarter of a bicycle wheel. It can be in use, idle, or long abandoned. Though there may be some grey areas in terms of what fits, as a guideline, the object in question needs to do something more than merely existing to perform it's function. For example, a well wouldn't fit but the pulley system for moving the bucket would.

(24,751 posts)All wonderful entries too. The first one reminds me of my dads workshop. The drawers full of tools
they had a smell that I can recall vividly. They smelled of metal, oil, wood, dirt
so many things. It added up to a smell that reminds me of my dad to this day. I swear I can smell that photo.
Thank you to all who contributed their work!

(8,972 posts)I suppose it's against the rules on DU to have eight different identities. But they would sure come in handy sometimes.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
