Many of those who get such supports are bitterly opposed to anything that otherwise reeks of Socialism. Those farmers are entitled beyond belief. And ALWAYS vote Republican, because the Republicans support those farm price supports, while demonizing everything else that is any kind of public support.

We never vote for republicans. We support all the programs Truman mentioned in that quote.

Without price supports, farmers would be living at a subsistence level. There would be no farm products for the rest of the country. There would be no civilization without modern agriculture.

Entitled? Look in the mirror.

I'm referencing farmers I have known who vote Republican and think that any other social welfare programs but what they get is Socialism or Communism or worse.

Most of the FDR farm price supports have been removed and replaced with subsidies for rich farmers, not average farmers.

Price supports have been removed and replace with subsidies that give the filthy rich a priority.

Just an example: I have 35 head of sheep on a small farm in the mountains of East TN. But I don't qualify for subsidies to build a hay barn because I don't have enough sheep. I've been raising sheep here for 20 years but I don't qualify.

Yet the new farmer down the road who bought out 5 farms and placed 300 heads of sheep on the land (to starve and has a death rate of about 50% because he won't deworm them or feed them during winter) qualifies in 8 months.

This is how many farm subsidies run. It doesn't matter how badly you raise sheep or how cruelly you treat them, if you got a lot of money to throw at it, you get the subsidies.

There are other horrific stories I could tell you but now and then a few real farmers are able to jump through the hoops to get the subsidies but it is rare.

And btw, I love what his other great quote was. People would holler: Give ‘em hell, Harry!” And he’d answer back: “I just tell ‘em the truth and they think it’s hell!”
