(7,611 posts)Far worse than the quotes that appear here. The letter is two pages long.
The statement issued later by Jayapal, when read closely, does nothing to walk back the contents of the original letter.
I guess I'm not surprised.

philosopher Alexandr Dugin, preaches a Russian Empire from Belfast to Vladivostok. How do they not know about this as Dugin's daughter was the one killed in the high-profile car bombing a few month's back in Moscow?
It's speculated that Ukrainian agents were targeting Dugin himself but she was the one driving his car in a last minute car switch.
Once Putin gets a piece of Ukraine, he'll target another neighbor...probably Poland...to achieve his goal of Russia stretching eleven time zones from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
These new Chamberlain-nesque innocents of Putin's Peter the Great 2.0 ambitions need to rethink this asap and walk it back.

(295 posts)The disappointment and disgust is too much to bear. This horrible group of 30 have given Putin full support through their horrible mistake of a letter. Open your eyes and see what they have caused!!!! The poor Ukrainian people have suffered greatly. To hear this must have been A horrible gut punch. Ukrainians have sacrificed everything for their survival and future. I am so disgusted. I hope
Our President is able to forge ahead as he bravely has done so far. I had to delete the remainder of my post as Im sure I would have been kicked off. I am so so upset. Long live Ukraine! May President Biden continue to be strong in his convictions! His moral compass is strong!!!!!

I've been deeply interested in politics by whole life and I'm a lifelong Democrat. I can not think of another occasion where I feel so disgusted by the stance of 30 House Democrats.
But tonight I'm feeling disgusted and ashamed.
Pretty fucking terrible timing on top of being a disgraceful position in any case.

(53,061 posts)1) When Ukraine gave up their nuclear weapons (they were third behind US and Russia) Russia signed the Budapest Memorandum agreeing to honor Ukraine's existing boundaries.
2) In 1922 when Ukraine out produced Russia farms after the catastrophic forced collectivization the Red Army confiscated all of Ukraine's food stocks and created a manufactured famine that killed 5 million Ukrainians.
Forcing the Ukrainians to negotiate with Putin is like forcing German Jews to negotiate with Hitler.
Finally the US gave it's word that we would support Ukraine if attacked. Do these idiots want us to go back on our promise?

(6,522 posts)or dupes of Putin. Ukraine is currently winning. Russia is ramping up its threats of a nuclear strike, apparently out of spite. There are reasons that their spokespeople and media people are making these statements. They want to inflict maximum fear, in order to gain the upper hand once again. This letter is not exactly supporting the President's position, even though they spent a lot of time in pseudo support of Biden's position on Ukraine. In reality, this supports Putin.
Putin has not once offered any equitable position of peace. Now, it is looking like Ukraine might fight to regain Crimea, unlawfully occupied by Russia. The visiting Russian tourists have had time to evacuate in advance of the fight. Game on.
You get nothing by wheeling and dealing with those evil bastards that make sport of the effort while all the while planning something even more evil. I am constantly amazed at how utterly stupid our leaders appear to be. I trust Joe! I think he is going to back Ukraine all the way. Right now, Russia can't field an army. Get 'em, Ukraine! Then, you can do diplomacy to your heart's content.
No one is fooled by Russia's childish efforts to convince the world that Ukraine plans to nuke itself. So, I am surprised that these 30 Congress Critters are willing to play into Putin's disinformation campaign so willingly.
Why aren't they asking for Joe to ask the UN to kick Russia out for threatening nukes? Don't they see that Russia can't afford to have anyone realize that they are the instigators, not Ukraine??
JFC, our own people...

(53,998 posts)Jesus H, how did they walk into that one? Why do we let these progressives discredit the Democratic Party's name?
I know they're nervous about the situation going nuclear. Everyone should be worried about that. But you're not going to decrease Putin's ability to saber rattle by knuckling under whenever he does it.
You can't deescalate tensions by groveling. Like most bullies, Putin in his militarists will only deescalate after they've gotten a bloody nose--which unfortunately means we have to keep paying ukrainians to slaughter
