There was an earthquake and I turned on the tv to see if there was any news. The station that came on was playing San Francisco and it was at the point where it was showing buildings collapsing.

spent the next 5 days with my friends helping people rescue what they could from red-tagged houses in Los Gatos. taking foolish risks that we shouldn't have taken but did anyway.

One of my co-workers was on the DART team that recovered bodies from the east bay freeway collapse.

Afterwards, California made some major investments in earthquake codes and earthquake damage mitigation on existing public structures and infrastructure. There can still some widespread damage from large quakes if the epicenter is in a highly populated or older location where earthquake mitigation hasn't or couldn't be made (especially historic areas), but we won't be seeing a repeat of casualties and damage as occured in the Loma Prieta quake or the Great Quake of 1906.
