Got a flier in the mail from the person running against my Democratic Governor Laura Kelly, and claimed she
voted for abortions up to the moment of birth. Came with a flag note HB 2218 3/23/11, so I looked it up.

New Late-Term Abortion RestrictionsHB 2218
HB 2218 enacts new restrictions on certain late-term abortions. The bill adds a new
section that lists the Legislatures findings on the capacity of an unborn child to feel pain.
HB 2218
The bill defines a pain-capable child as an unborn child that has reached the gestational
age of 22 weeks or more,...........
The bill also establishes the circumstances and procedures to be followed for exceptions
that would allow abortions where a pain-capable child is present, including cases where
specific medical conditions would lead the physician to believe the death of a pregnant
woman might result, or there might be a substantial and irreversible physical impairment
of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman.
So yes KS allows abortions after 22 weeks if the life of the mother is at risk, and this is what repugs
claim is "abortions up to the moment of birth", kind of implying for any reason. They know how to use
"FEAR" tactics. And guess who signed it into law?
republican Gov. Sam Brownback, so I guess he also approves of "abortions up to the moment of birth"

(179,869 posts)There is no such procedure used in the real world but these assholes think that one can abort a fetus second before it is born. This concept is not allowed under Roe but these assholes want to pretend that this procedure exists and is the reason why all abortions need to be banned.

(82,849 posts)I have resolved that if I'm ever in a room where someone voices this "partial birth abortion" bullshit, I'm going to ask, "Where did this happen? When? Who was involved? What you're talking about does. Not. Happen. You should be ashamed of yourself for trying to peddle such nonsense."

(39 posts)I've worked in reproductive healthcare for two decades and this simply doesn't not happen. It is a wacky right wing talking point because health care providers do not want any government officials making medical decisions.

(41,634 posts)... they don't want Medicaid paying for the abortions. Period.
We Democrats had almost 50 years to work this out and codify the law and work out how it was going to be administered. If we had done that we wouldn't be here now. But we coasted along and let Roe become "the law of the land," even though it wasn't a law, ever. It was a ruling by SCOTUS and we always knew that they could undo it if they felt like it.
Our inaction on Roe - for almost 50 years - has brought us here.
