Insider via Yahoo NewsSen. Sherrod Brown, who was first elected to the upper chamber in 2006, is the rare Democratic statewide officeholder who has found longterm success in the increasingly Republican-leaning state.
And some Democrats have argued that funding for political candidates is better spent in newer swing states like Arizona, Georgia, and North Carolina, as they see Ohio as having drifted beyond their reach.
It's a mindset that Rep. Tim Ryan, this year's Democratic Senate nominee, has wholeheartedly rejected pointing to the need for the party to once again engage with the working-class voters who had traditionally been a major part of the party's base.
Ryan has run a highly competitive race against Republican Senate nominee JD Vance, surprising many Democrats who were skeptical that their nominee would be in contention to carry the Buckeye State this year.

(640 posts)We MUST get back to a "country over party" mindset.
Happens with both parties but I hear it more from the Democratic Party officials as they plot and plan how and where to spend money--they give up before they start in a lot of areas because. . . .too something. Can't win it. Don't bother trying to get people elected into office. Don't waste money for futile effort.
In fact, because of our political system, we have a lot of "fly over" states. Politicians don't bother campaigning in states that they feel they cannot win because money is now god and time is too much to make an effort in every place.
If we changed the political system to eliminate the electoral college (it is a relic of the past) so our President won on the popular vote; we would have a much better feel for the current needs of our country. And, it would require "politicking" everywhere--not just in the states guaranteed to "win."
If we eliminated gerrymandering, . . . .
If we eliminated dark money, . . . .
It is not insurmountable but we ALL need to work at it. Independents are a growing part of the population due to dissatisfaction and, since the pollsters generally don't bother with them, they have a great ability to swing elections.

(52,147 posts)rights, and is a terrible retail politician. Even with that, the race is at best a tie. We should be spending money on this race, but future ones not so much.
