Twitter is planning to start charging $20 per month for verification

Now that he owns Twitter, Elon Musk has given employees their first ultimatum: Meet his deadline to introduce paid verification on Twitter or pack up and leave.

The directive is to change Twitter Blue, the company’s optional, $4.99 a month subscription that unlocks additional features, into a more expensive subscription that also verifies users, according to people familiar with the matter and internal correspondence seen by The Verge. Twitter is currently planning to charge $19.99 for the new Twitter Blue subscription. Under the current plan, verified users would have 90 days to subscribe or lose their blue checkmark. Employees working on the project were told on Sunday that they need to meet a deadline of November 7th to launch the feature or they will be fired.

Musk has been clear in the months leading up to his acquisition that he wanted to revamp how Twitter verifies accounts and handles bots. On Sunday, he tweeted: “The whole verification process is being revamped right now.”

Platformer’s Casey Newton first reported that Twitter was considering charging for verification. A spokesperson for Twitter didn’t respond to a request for comment by press time.

the workers may find ways to sabotage the business.

With the obscure bespoke tech involved in Twitter, that could be fun.

I've been retired and out of the software development field, and I certainly don't know Twitter's code, and I know that development cycles have sped up, but that still seems like an awfully short time to roll out a major new feature.

The purchase. Interest on the debt will be a billion p. a.
Revenue is 650 million a year.

More like he gave users an ultimatum. Users who will drop out in droves if they have to pay. And this guy is a supposed business genius…?

It was trialled in Australia and Canada beginning in June 2021, and not rolled out to the US and New Zealand until five months later.

Currently, there are estimated to be 300,000 verified (blue tick) accounts, and the system is reportedly a mess and has been for a long while.

Twitter Blue currently offers these delights:

* Undo Tweet, which delays the posting of a tweet by up to one minute to allow the submitter to withdraw it before it is posted.
* Bookmarks, which allows users to save individual tweets into folders.
* Reader mode, which converts threads of tweets into an article-like view.
* A selection of color themes and app icons for the Twitter mobile app.
* Dedicated customer support.
* NFT profile pictures, added on January 20, 2022. They are displayed in a hexagon-shaped frame, rather than circular like other profile pictures.
* A planned edit feature for tweets was in development as of April 2022. [currently being trialled for a very limited number of users]
* Customization of the navigation bar.

If he's expecting these changes to be rolled out worldwide by 7 November, I don't think he's going to have any staff left when he finishes rage-firing on 8 November.

(Maybe that's the idea. Adapt Tesla technology and make Twitter autonomously self-administering?)

is going to run into this issue very soon, if not already. Personally, I don't use twitter and never planned to. And now he's wanting users to pay money? I wonder why Jack Dorsey (the original creator/owner of twitter) didn't try this prior to musk coming onboard?
