Germany, in the 1930's, had their own "Big Lie". They had their own cult Leader. Many Germans worshiped him like a god. He told them they were "special". They were superior to all other races on Earth. That "Big Lie" gave them license to kill all the inferior people under them. And history has recorded the results of that "Big Lie".
The "Big Lie" of today is that the last election was rigged. It was stolen from their Leader. They too, believe they are superior to the "Libs" and those weak and morally depraved Americans that conflict with their religion.
We can see the direction it is going.
Where does it end?

(1,530 posts)Although I suppose that may be pushed to a dreamed of post-conflict aftermath, but to get there conflict is essential.
Big Lies are wedges what justify between scaled-up group conflict
Trump's BIG LIE and that of his followers is that he is so great he can only lose if his opponents cheat.
And so the narratives of events are reshaped and weaponized to make losers feel cheated and outraged
We don't need policies, rules and laws, to address the problems of life we need conflict to resolve feeling cheated and put upon.
We absolutely need politicians who convince us of their capacity for pugilism for our cause.
Having increased numbers of 'drop boxes' for voting and early voting weren't a reasonable responses to health concerns during a pandemic, they were -the- mechanisms, the 'modus operendi', by which the election was 'stolen'.
Why do English teachers tell students to look for the 'conflicts' that drive interest in plots? Because western civilization is rife with conflict and it so much drives everyday interpretation of our interpersonal lives. As the Chinese saying warns... the real threat is live through 'interesting' times.

(5,104 posts)It never turns out well when such cults gain power.
There are always demagogues who would violently turn societies against "the others" in their midst.
This is our great challenge as liberal democrats/Democrats.

Follow Brazil, it's the exact same thing there after this election. Bolsonaro isn't conceding, he's given no indication he's going to go quietly. I'm not sure what safeguards are in place, but a coup is still very much on the table there. And all the while behind the scenes, the Right is working to undermine the right to vote. Passing local laws that make it tougher to vote, suppressing voting, and generally weakening the democracy in every possible way. Bolsonaro's followers will never accept the results of the election, they believe Bolsonaro to be divinely chosen. In Brazil, Bolsonaro had the police set up blockades to stop voters from getting to the polls, in the US we're not far off from that with armed militias showing up to intimidate voters.
The media is not doing enough to raise alarm. Democracy is on retreat and under threat globally.
