He predicted that symbols would become more important than reality.

My examples: Holding a cross and loudly praising Jesus has become more important (to many) than actually following the teachings of Jesus. Hugging the flag and shouting about patriotism has become more important (to many) than actually loving and helping our country work and prosper. Invoking the Founding Fathers as a symbol has become (to many) more important than adhering to the principals the Founders actually envisioned.

Republicans have become masters of exploiting symbols to gain power.

He said Republicans like symbols such as the Cross or the Flag.

He called them Symbol Minded People.

Righteous.
