There is some imprimatur in having the full Court look at something a lower court has done and saying, "We don't see the problem." And in a politically charged situation like the 2020 election, they might feel more motivated to give things a once over. Sotomayor and Kagan have both given stays for related cases, and I suspect largely for similar reasons.
