(48,958 posts)Funny story.
I just started listening to his podcast last week, and am glad I did. The vignets that he closes with are often a light palate cleanser to the serving of news dealt with his trademark passion during the rest of the podcast.
GoCubsGo
(34,914 posts)So enlightening, as they help explain a lot of what went on in the past, and what's happening in the media now. I love how he refers to CNN's head, Chris Licht, as "the paste eater."
Keith's opening rants can sometimes be a little too overwrought for my liking, but I certainly appreciate his use of humor in the rest of the podcast.
I have always detested him, I dont really spend that much time thinking about him though lol but sometimes people post something about him here and I always comment on it. Well, prolly not always 😹 He used to be on murder she wrote playing bit parts he was a not so great actor in my opinion.

(32,354 posts)Two of my least favorite media figures---together! Like a train wreck you can't look away from. My favorite part: the Fox "News" commentators, masturbating on-air over Maher for his trashing of liberals, so much more than he used to---and Maher admitting it was true, because liberals are so much "goofier" than they used to be. And people wonder why I walked away from Maher's show, years ago.
Fuck both of those losers. Time for a stiff drink.

(667 posts)...he starts going against liberalism and hating on the current politics and at the end of the day, Rush Limbaugh tell him at the end of the episode that Brian basically has to go against the political grain and he really just wants to hate the status quo.
I think that's Maher. Maher is at his happiest railing against the current status quo. He's a contrarian. That's all.

(4,989 posts)I dont agree with him all the time but I find his show entertaining. New Rules is always good. Hes more of a mainstream media commentator than a real deep dive political wonk. Thats his weakness to me. His takes on important issues are surface shallow sometimes. I feel like he should know more than he does about specific things. But for all the serious talk that goes on, Real Time still a comedy and entertainment show at the end of the day. And he rarely fails to deliver on those fronts. (1,664 posts)I appreciate the breadth of Bill's comedic career, but I have grown so tired of him becoming a one-note singer regarding woke politics. EVERYTHING is about that now for him. Every week's "New Rules" segment is bashing wokeness. Are there always going to be self-indulgent, over-the-top activists? Of course, but Bill overestimates how rabid and judgmental liberal voters are, instead of seeing the array of diverse viewpoints that have ALWAYS defined the left.
He thinks Democrats' struggles in recent elections is because of race and LGBT activists, but how about the decades worth of misinformation from Fox News, talk radio, and the internet? And relentless Newt Gingrich-inspired politics.
What also finally did it for me is watching John Oliver recently, who makes it clear that you can have biting humor that is, in fact, directed at the right targets. Bill Maher just doesn't want to change. He's really a libertarian, after all, not a progressive, so I guess none of this should be suprising.

But his views and both siderism have gotten more and more skewed and out of touch. He's further to the Right every time I watch him. Everything is the Dems fault, everything is the fault of woke. It's maddening. He's become a rich snob who has no idea what's going on in the real world.

(10,969 posts)I don't know why. You have this whole thread, then way at the bottom is your response.
He's interesting. Sometimes a little too cranky/cantankerous. A little get off my lawn. But he's critical from inside the house mostly. And I'd rather have a friend call me stupid so I can course correct than an enemy land a hit on me for same thing later.
Some people really just don't want to hear any criticism, no matter how warranted.
It's funny, too, because he has been so overtly pro-Biden for months in ways you do not see in some of the most friendly commentators. I think most people who hate him haven't actually watched him in years. Just a game of telephone about how awful he is with group reinforcement.
The guy who thinks we need big government solutions to problems is a huge libertarian, ya know.
Hey, everyone needs a target. Now, to watch that personification of objectivity . . . *checks* Keith Olbermann.

(10,969 posts)I always like those shows a bit better, too. When the guests aren't as well known or cable news fixtures, so they just talk instead of trying to get the camera on themselves.
But technology rewiring our brains is a huge bugaboo of mine I hammer constantly. People are just seeing, hearing, and reading what reinforces their preferences. Forget how it aggravates partisanship, it just creates massive blind spots and ignorance that they're not even aware of. One of my most common responses online is, "Have you met . . . people?" Because what I'm reading is just so far out of touch with how people in real life actually are.
But Gillian Tett, the British guest, nailed it when she said, "It's not Millennial or Gen Z, it's Gen P - Generation Playlist." I love that, Gen P. It's so painfully true, and so much a problem in our politics and our culture. And it crosses generations and ages. It's an attitude, no a cohort.
We're seeing that right now in real time (pardon the pun). "I like this poll because it makes me happy. I hate this poll and don't believe it because it makes me sad." That's what having life treated like a playlist does to people.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)GT! And generation playlist!
Agree about people only seeing or only wanting to see what reenforces their preferences. What worries me more is the denigration of anyone outside that bubble. You can't be 50% with me; you must be 100% with me. You think it's caused by technology? How so?
There needs to be more grey.

(13,985 posts)He's usually spot on, although when he starts to talk about vaccines, he usually says something cringe or dubious. His basic idea is that Dems shouldn't say or do things that would make a good Onion headline. I would argue that mainstream Dems don't do that. For example, "decriminalizing crime," is not even close to a mainstream Dem opinion, but all Dems unfairly pay out the nose for the folly of a tiny few.
It's really hard to argue with most of the things he says. I would say that the vast majority of the things he says that annoy some people on the left would be found to be both logically supportable in a fair reading and, perhaps more importantly, democratically supported by a large majority of Dems across all backgrounds.
