Trump lawyers saw Justice Thomas as 'only chance' to stop 2020 election certification

“We want to frame things so that Thomas could be the one to issue some sort of stay or other circuit justice opinion saying Georgia is in legitimate doubt,” Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro wrote in an email exchange.

Donald Trump’s attorneys saw a direct appeal to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as their best hope of derailing Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 presidential election, according to emails newly disclosed to congressional investigators.

“We want to frame things so that Thomas could be the one to issue some sort of stay or other circuit justice opinion saying Georgia is in legitimate doubt,” Trump attorney Kenneth Chesebro wrote in a Dec. 31, 2020, email to Trump’s legal team. Chesebro contended that Thomas would be “our only chance to get a favorable judicial opinion by Jan. 6, which might hold up the Georgia count in Congress.”

Trump attorneys were worried having Trump sign certain legal documents could lead to criminal exposure

Eastman: “I have no doubt that an aggressive DA or US Atty someplace will go after both the President and his lawyers once all the dust settles."

Georgia is 11th Circuit. Thomas is justice for 11th. Goes to him first. nt okaawhatever Nov 2022 #6
Just a handy coincidence. They had a lot of other cases in other states, Ocelot II Nov 2022 #7

who would help them out? Why him in particular and not any of the other conservative Justices? Could it be... Ginny? Did they think she would get Clarence to turn the screws for them? As it turned out not even Thomas did what they wanted, but maybe he thought that would end up outing Ginny too soon?

Let me know if my tinfoil hat is too tight but this seems kinda stinky.

Not at all, I think you hit it out of the ballpark, like what the Phillies did to the Astros last night.

And don't count on Ginni being the only reason. He'd have been a solid prospect before he even met her.

People keep asserting that the Court is “pro Trump”. It’s not and never has been.
