When you think of the insults that people use, like "retard" or "that is so gay", or "you throw/run/hit like a girl"; those are comparative insults. The insult is in the association. You are intellectually slow like a person with mental retardation (now called Intellectually Disabled). Gayness is bad. Girls are inferior to boys. That is what you imply when you use those insults.

It stems from a very real medical diagnosis from very early in human civilization, 1900 BCE where the wandering hystera (uterus) was believed to be a defect in women that caused excessive emotion.
