(7,423 posts)There isn't going to be a perfect solution to the problem of emissions from the transportation sector. A better strategy would be to get behind the horse that actually has a chance of winning this race. That horse is Elon Musk.

(7,423 posts)The ones with one foot in the EV game, and one foot in the ICE game?
Tesla is the only large American manufacturer with both feet in the EV game. The also-rans got in and are staying in for the moment largely because they are scared shitless that Musk might actually pull this off. At the first sign of trouble, they can cut their losses and go back to burning oil...and with strong Republican support.
We MUST NOT forget that.

(19,257 posts)The last big thing was the Cyber Truck, and it's nowhere to be seen. In the meantime, Ford and GM have trucks either already on the road or will shortly.
The only major EV advancement from Tesla right now appears to be their semi-trailer, which is cool but rather limited in scale.
Tesla WAS cutting edge 5-10 years ago. Now it's losing it's edge as Musk pursues other passions.
And strong Republican support? Are you forgetting that Musk is a Republican by his own admission?

(50,562 posts)The companies that make semis are working on electric ones, and theyre farther along than Musk is.
One of the biggest markets for electric heavy duty trucks will be refuse collection. Yup, garbage trucks. One of the biggest players in the garbage truck market is Mack
and, right now, you can buy an electric garbage truck chassis from Mack. Peterbilt has sold 579EV tractors to several customers
and Peterbilt solved the recharging network problem by making the truck compatible with the Tesla charging system.
Musks semi is going to be a REALLY hard sell because, thanks to where the seat is, youre going to have to learn to back the truck all over again. The only real difference between the 579 and 579EV from the drivers perspective is that the 579EV doesnt use diesel. From a fleet managers perspective the difference between a Tesla Semi and a 579EV is the parts that actually need to be replaced on a semi - namely, brakes - are easier to get for the Pete. You just know Musk used proprietary brakes on this truck; Peterbilt put Meritors on theirs and any truck line in the US already has Meritor brake parts in stock.

(3,616 posts)It is available where I am, and the only provider where I am is Line-of-site wireless internet. The best they can do (unless I want to pay something like $300/mo) is around 7mbps download, and 1-2mbps for uploads. I am able to stream at the same time someone else is streaming in the house, so it works, but not exactly speedy. (DEFINITELY better than HughesNet, which was barely better than dialup)
So my cousin got Starlink, and he is thrilled with having over 100mbps for downloads, and 20 or something for uploads. He got rid of his cable and is now streaming everything. (I would like to do that, but our internet is just too slow)
So I was about to do it, it would save me money in the long run if I could get rid of cable expenses, but I wasn't too thrilled with Elon and was slow on making a decision.
THEN Elon gave the Ukrainians Starlink, which has helped them immensely. I had to give him credit for doing that. So I was leaning towards getting it.
THEN all the BS with Twitter and Elon buying it happened, and I just soured on him. I was still thinking of holding my nose and going with it for now, until something better was available.
BUT THEN I read that certain areas in Ukraine was having failures of Starlink, areas that were in Russias interest to have failures, and to make it worse, I next saw a Tweet where Elon was asking for the Pentagon to pay for the service in Ukraine. And that really set me off to think an individual like Elon could control the outcome of the War in Ukraine, and after that I saw Elon post on Twitter how he supported letting Russia keep certain areas of Ukraine as Russia.
That did it for me, my decision had been made. Fuck Elon. And this is all before he re-tweeted the vile Paul Pelosi falsehoods when the guy was still in the freaking hospital. I will NEVER get Starlink now. I hope Twitter makes him go broke. I also deleted my Twitter account (which I barely used, but it seems you need it to view links to videos on twitter. I am now searching for stuff I want to see on twitter on Youtube instead). Interestingly enough, even though I turned these notifications off, AND deleted the account, I am still getting emails from twitter about tweets. I can't figure out how to turn them off since I already did in the account before I deleted it.
Anyway, thanks for reading my rant. I feel only slightly better.

(3,616 posts)My biggest concern is that Elon could censor what I can see or do on the internet, based on political affiliations. I just can't risk that. And besides, Fuck Elon!
I totally understand if it is the only decent option. If my line of sight wasn't available, I would be desperate and might hold my nose and do it, but for now, it works well enough.

(50,562 posts)Thats why most of the Teslas you see are white. Blue is a $1000 option, black $1500 and red $2000 on the Model 3 and Y; on the S and X red is $2500 and the other colors are $1500.
By comparison, Volkswagen charges $400 for red and all the other colors are no upcharge. Red will always be an upcharge because red car paint is really expensive due to the pigment they use and that its fussier to apply, but theres no damn reason why its that much of one.

(12,690 posts)I'd sell it out of principle but my wife has become rather attached. I will give them top marks for service efficiency. At least for little warranty items. Schedule through the app, show up in a van on time, fix it unattended. I personally have a Polestar 2, which I will never part with. Unfortunately, Tesla's software is far superior to Polestar and Volvo.

(19,095 posts)I've driven Teslas, they're pretty cool, but I don't think the quality is there right now. And when people talk performance they think of speed and not handling. Well, Tesla accelerates faster than anything out there, 0-60 in 3 seconds or so is insane. But handling is a big part of performance too, and Teslas do not handle well. They have a cheap boxy feel to them on the interior.
There are very exciting new EVs coming out every year right now. I'm at least 3 years from needing another car, so I can wait for the next EV that really has everything I need. The Kia EV6 GT has really piqued my interest and is better quality and a lower cost than the Tesla. And it's still got super car acceleration 0-60 in 3.4s.

(13,566 posts)Heated and cooled leather seats. Power driver side. Heated steering wheel. Harman Karden stereo system. Lane keeping and parking assist. Auto-folding mirrors. An app for remote starting/locking/location etc. 100,000 mile warranty including the battery. It MSRPed for around $35. I got nearly $9K of that back from federal and state rebates.
Unfortunately, the rebates on foreign cars is gone. I really like that we're encouraging unions and domestic auto production, but it's unfortunate that there are many EVs being made right now that could be replacing ICE cars being sold.
