So by definition, he could confess to anything he's asked, and he's safe.

Interestingly (to me, but what do I know), during the immunity negotiations, the U.S. attorney said Patel would not be asked about anything that would tend to self-incrimination. Patel disagreed, and the judge agreed with Patel about getting immunity. Assuming the prosecuting attorney is telling the truth, the government gave Patel a wholly unnecessary grant of immunity; they didn't give anything up by agreeing to Patel's immunity, because they weren't going to ask him anything incriminating.

Now, however, with an immunity agreement in his pocket, Patel has to answer every question put to him fully and truthfully. He can't take the Fifth. If his testimony is false in any way, or he withholds information, or he is evasive or otherwise non-responsive, he could lose his immunity. If Patel is trying to tiptoe through a testimonial minefield AND stay in the former guy's good graces, he may have just outsmarted himself.

to be used in any indictment against Trump on those issues he's being granted immunity.

He won't risk not telling the truth and being subject to not only having the charges DOJ knows full well they can convict him on but add to that perjury charges.

I think his lawyer finally told him to take the best deal you can and save your own ass because Trump isn't going to save it for you.

That's why they decided to grant him immunity to force him to testify. This is bad news for traitor Trump.
