Exclusive: DOJ mulling potential special counsel if Trump runs in 2024

If TFG does announce a run for the 2024 nomination, the DOJ can deal with this by appointing a special counsel

https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/03/politics/doj-trump-investigation-expansion-special-counsel/index.html

As Donald Trump inches closer to launching another presidential run after the midterm election, Justice Department officials have discussed whether a Trump candidacy would create the need for a special counsel to oversee two sprawling federal investigations related to the former president, sources familiar with the matter tell CNN.

The Justice Department is also staffing up its investigations with experienced prosecutors so it’s ready for any decisions after the midterms, including the potential unprecedented move of indicting a former president.

In the weeks leading up to the election, the Justice Department has observed the traditional quiet period of not making any overt moves that may have political consequences. But behind the scenes, investigators have remained busy, using aggressive grand jury subpoenas and secret court battles to compel testimony from witnesses in both the investigation into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his alleged mishandling of national security documents kept at his Palm Beach home.

includes the prospect of indictments of Trump’s associates – moves that could be made more complicated if Trump declares a run for the presidency.

“They can crank up charges on almost anybody if they wanted to,” said one defense attorney working on January 6-related matters, who added defense lawyers have “have no idea” who ultimately will be charged.

This has gone on long enough and they have enough evidence that they don't have to kick the ball down the hall

Special counsels are for "a particular case of suspected wrongdoing for which a conflict of interest exists for the usual prosecuting authority;" what the fuck is the conflict of interest here? There is none. Stop fucking bending over backwards for this criminal mother fucker and prosecute his ass already. Lord knows there is a fucking cornucopia of crimes to choose from at this point. He's fucking probably committing crimes as we speak; if you wait to prosecute him till you fully investigate and follow through every single crime he's committed, you'll be investigating for decades after the fuck's death. You know he has committed crimes -- PLURAL -- fucking charge him with one or two of them already.

you know, i knew something like this was going to happen. for months we've heard "too close to the election to indict someone who is NOT RUNNING FOR OFFICE"

and i said to someone the other day "watch, as soon as the election is over, he'll say 'i'm running for president'! and doj will say "oh, it would be improper to indict a candidate for president!" and drumpf will ride that wave for the next TWO YEARS

a special council would be starting at square one and would need to learn ALL the evidence before making any moves. that would take months AT LEAST, if not over a year.

8. THREAD: why a special counsel to investigate the leaders of the coup is a good idea.

A special counsel is a good idea

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1452642401588236289.html

THREAD: why a special counsel to investigate the leaders of the coup is a good idea.

First, POWER: a special counsel has prosecutorial powers and can grant all their team members the full powers of a US Attorney. They can indict and their subpoenas are toothy. 1/

Second, SPEED: I know you feel like Mueller and Durham took forever, but it took only five months before Mueller started making it rain indictments on the likes of Manafort and Gates. It would be their ONLY focus, unlike the DoJ or FBI. 2/
Third, TRANSPARENCY: unlike the DoJ or congress, a special counsel is REQUIRED to disclose who & why they did or didn’t prosecute, & if the AG narrows the scope or blocks an indictment, they MUST tell congress they did so. DoJ doesn’t have to tell us shit. 3/

Fourth, INDEPENDENCE: special counsel has full power of a US Atty and insulates the AG and FBI from things they probably don’t want to be involved in. Sure, the select committee is bipartisan, but a special counsel is non-partisan. 4/
Finally, no, I don’t think it should be Mueller. Nor can it be someone like Yates or Schiff or anyone that would otherwise have to recuse from investigating trump over conflicts of interest. There can be ZERO conflicts. That’s the first thing donald went after Mueller for. END
PS: and if Laurence Tribe - one of the greatest if not THE greatest legal minds of our time - thinks it’s a good idea, it’s a good idea.

Maybe cuz they are?

I'm am so sick of this phrase: unprecedented move of indicting a former president.

Our side has too much reverence for the office of the president. Let's talk about the unprecedented crimes this man committed while holding the highest office of the land. If I had to put money on it today, I'd bet the fucker's gonna walk. It's up to the Big Mac's now.
