Why are Republicans telling voters they want to cut Social Security by a third? MarketWatch

If the Republicans take over the House, Rep. Kevin McCarthy has not ruled out cutting Social Security. So, it’s worth taking a look at what a Republican plan might look like.

The proposal in the RSC document — Make Social Security Solvent Again — is based on a bill put forward in 2016 by Sam Johnson (R-Texas). That legislation would eliminate Social Security’s 75-year deficit solely by cutting benefits. According to scoring by the Social Security actuaries at the time, the Johnson plan would reduce Social Security costs at the end of the 75-year projection period by 31%.

This 31% cut is the result of three major changes:

* Raising the Full Retirement Age—currently 67—to 69
* Dramatically reducing benefits for above-average earners
* Eliminating the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for individuals with income in excess of $85,000 ($170,000 for married couples) and using a chain-weighted inflation index for those below

Although the RSC takes a slightly different approach to raising the Full Retirement Age — linking it to increases in life expectancy — one would expect the overall impact on future workers to be roughly the same.

At first glance, one might conclude that’s a fine outcome: cut the benefits of the well paid and preserve the benefits of the low paid. But look closely at the earnings associated with the categories of well paid. The medium worker, who sees benefits drop to 77% of current law, had career average earnings of $58,700 in 2021 and the “high” earner, who sees benefits drop to 40% of current law, earned $94,000.

These are not rich people.

or really even cares about it.

Lets face it, most of these goons don't need the $1200/month to make rent. Even if they are old enough to collect it, they don't really care about it.

Likewise, a lot of their base isn't collecting it. Those that are and need it are probably living on a diet of fox news and don't even know about it, or if they are they have been convinced it will be better for them.

In short, their base doesn't care. Their friends and associates don't care. The people who will care after the cuts are made are being lied to about the impacts.

And importantly, the media doesn't care.

That's why.

the social security that they too, put into/paid into SS over the years too. And they keep harping on it, regardless of if their own base is negatively impacted by it too (their proposed cutbacks).

Chances are, the gop base is not calling their offices and saying wtf........

They aren't sending the message through gop channels. They aren't complaining on rwnj social media sites. The rw media isn't covering it.

Their voters won't take it seriously until it happens.

Putin scares world with nukes and food/fuel shortages. World demands Ukraine surrender.

GOP scares the public with SS cuts. Public demands Dems cave to GOP demands about the budget.

and bureaucratic red tape that goes with it, then eventually privatize what's left so it becomes a billionaire cash cow. All part of the movement to Transfer Wealth from the Very Many to the Very Few and change Democracy to Oligarchy.

but I think they are now on a path where if they can get in power they are going for wholesale slaughter of programs and then try to hold office by suppression and overturning/refusing vote counts wherever and however they can. A compliant group of Supremes will pass it off as a matter to be handled by the states. The corporations have poured a huge amount of money into these mid-terms and none of it is help average people.

They're signaling to their mega-rich donors that the "austerity" that they legislate will be deep-and-wide and crush the middle-class.

but the real threat would be if we lose in 2024 and Republicans maintain control of Congress (if they regain it this year or 2024)

Also, if the orange mass runs and is the nominee, which I don’t think he will be, he’s the best GOTV tool we have.
