Wolf Blitzer has a question about today's midterms, which he posed to his panel

"If Republicans win big today, how much credit will we have to give Donald Trump?"

And, with a click of the remote, that was the end of my CNN Election Coverage viewing for today.

Almost as if the Saudis & Russians were in charge of the narrative anymore.

Doesn't anyone in journalism have to study journalism any more? My dad got his degree at Columbia Journalism before going out and looking for a job. These guys all seem to be graduates of Murdoch Money U, and with degrees in Self-Promotion. I think that if you ask half of them what it means to be a journalist, they'll answer, "no idea, I'm a member of the press."

and it serves as an incentive to defeat the Republicans.

Asking obvious questions isn't a "move to the right."

What sort of a press do you want in this country???

"If Republicans lose big today, how much blame will we have to give Donald Trump? " Because, you know, both sides.

I'll see myself out.

it will be a completely normal result totally in line with historical trends.

Trump's first mid-term: lost 40 House seats
Obama's first mid-term: lost 63 House seats
Bush Jr's first mid-term: gained 8 House seats (trend outlier due to 9/11, Bush lost 30 House seats at his next mid-term)
Clinton's first mid-term: lost 52 House seats
Bush Sr's first (only) mid-term: lost 8 House seats
Reagan's first mid-term: lost 26 House seats
Carter's first (only) mid-term: lost 15 House seats
Ford's first (only) mid-term: lost 48 House seats

Take out Bush's 9/11 outlier and the average is 32 House seats lost during a president's first mid-term over the last 50 or so years. If Republicans manage that, they're in line with historical trends.

If they do worse than that, then they've underperformed.

12. I Get Your Point, But...

...I get a different success number.
I'm throwing out Bush the Lesser because of the 9/11 effect, & Ford because he was potus for 15 minutes & the Watergate effect.
For first midterm, I get a total of 204 lost seats in 6 elections or 34 per election.
Using a simple estimation of standard deviation, I get a bit over 15.
So the 95% confidence range is actually 4 to 64.
The dataset is too small to define a real single performance expectation.
