Radio licensing revenue is a minor part of overall sports licensing revenues. In 2013/14, a radio station would pay $1500 to Westwood One/Dial Global for a championship NCAA basketball game. How much of that goes to the university? Details of licensing agreements between state funded schools and licensing companies are usually kept confidential, even from school administration.

I have been on a university Athletic Council. First, more often than not the athletic funding is controlled by a "foundation" that handles ticket sales, donations, etc. The university administration adheres to rules like those imposed by the NCAA, but decisions of the foundations for stadiums, tv/radio, etc. are not negotiated by the institution. Even when they are in the hands of a Board of Trustees, most of the BOT is politically appointed by some GOP Governor. Just like a shirt shop can pay a small fee to put a logo on a t-shirt, a radio network can negotiate to use a university name. Of course, most universities welcome a "coaches corner" weekly show or advertising that might recruit students. If they deny a request to use the university images, they would simply be sued. There are many different contracts (some local AM and some large networks) that broadcast mostly sports events.

I looked into this a few years ago, and most universities in Florida also have media contracts negotiated by the athletic conference (like the ACC or American) in addition to some from the athletic foundations. Again, these contracts are out of the hands of the institution.

Finally, now that students have NIL (Name & Likeness) contracts - it really, really get complicated.

It is true that media and talk radio in general, including local ABC or CBS stations, are often RW talking heads. People set their dials to listen to some ball game, but if they tune in any other time, it is a bunch of crazies. Of course it is changing rapidly with streaming games (ESPN3 or Paramount Sports or Youtube) taking over more and more of the local sports events.

Here in Florida there are also stations (like in Tampa: WMNF) who have interviews and shows about liberal causes, even though they carry fewer sports events. Sometimes they troll universities regularly, so denial of a contract to a conservative network would clearly face a legal challenge in Florida.

Each institutional process and authority is different, and everyone who is interested needs to get involved in their individual situation or team's contracts. With public universities, you can make a Public Records request for many contracts. If the university says that they are not party to the contract so they cannot give it to you, then the foundation, athletic conference, or radio station may (or may not) be obliged to give up the contract and see exactly what fees are paid and who negotiated the contract.

fix the problem.

i know the admins are usually not in control and the licensing agreements are complicated and probably all over the place but that's really not the issue.

the GOP made it part of the strategy to piggyback those sports programs. there are many sports talk stations that can't get those games. and very very few games are broadcast on liberal talk stations.

when democrats finally get smart and raise a stink about these schools shooting themselves, their students, their faculty and employees in the foot on every issue, and crapping on their mission statements, the schools will have to have a public discussion about it. one school telling their conferences or their licensing companies that they want to find apolitical alternatives will snowball into others doing the same. that's all it would take to get advertisers very nervous. the radio ad industry would have to work to force the stations and licensing cos and conferences to fix the problem before they lost too many advertisers to other media.

the university of colorado was getting regular low level activism to get football off denver's KOA, the loudest Limbaugh station in the colorado multi state area. it had been doing more sports but still had limbaugh. the last couple of times i went through there some student groups were aware of the problem. i also dropped in and talked to long nexuses assistant. a year later the station moved limbaugh to a lesser station.

i couldn't find out why, but if the station thought it might go public that liberal CU was thinking about looking for other options it could reach the rockies and broncos players and they wouldn't want them getting involved.

that's the kind of thing that will scare the crap out of the radio ad industry and the GOP howling about it will make it worse. someone suggested the GOP will use the supreme court to stop it. it will never get there.

We ended up with a wack job governor for two terms because there was no 50% line to cross. La Page(?) hat 35/6% and the democratic vote split the rest and lost.
