For the last week or two I've been saying that the Dems were absolutely screwed in 2022. My prediction was that the polls were underestimating the Republicans and that talk of early turnout was nothing but Democratic coping. I believed that the GOP would gain 35-40 House Seats, 3-4 Senate Seats, and would sweep many of the gubernatorial elections. And I also said if I was wrong I would admit it. So here I am, for the first time ever, absolutely shocked by the result of an election. Not even 2016 surprised me like 2022 did.
I've never been so happy to be so, so wrong. Not only did the GOP, to put it politely, shit the bed on these midterms but MAGAism seems to be a largely dead ideology. Trump's endorsement is like the kiss of death. There are still a ton of challenges ahead but I'm suddenly far, far less concerned about this country's future and the world suddenly makes much more sense again.
I still don't know how we did it but I'm hardly one to complain about such things. Good job all. You held it together even when people like me were losing their minds.

(29,414 posts)Choose optimism every time. What good does pessimism do? We live the unpleasantness in advance of the actual experience.

(17,546 posts)I pretty much stayed out of the discussions about the races, but in my heart, I just knew that we would hold the line, and we did.
Thank you for admitting you were surprised at the results, now time to get back to work to assure that we keep on winning and throw these MAGAt's into the dustbin of history.

(706 posts)Big YUP.
Bottom line: What we don't know that we don't know is the biggest slice of the pie, especially for would-be election predictions.
And, oh, relying on polls, pollsters and aggregators -- even a few recent aggregator apologists here who tried unsuccessfully to justify their existence -- seems a guarantee to shine a bright light on what we don't know.
Amusing and a tad annoying to see the incessant "predictions" and lists of percentages here.

(16,660 posts)I ignored the results last night after about 8.
I just wish I can figure out what has happened to my beloved Florida. As a Native, it's breaking my heart having this piece of shit running my state.
Other than that, I'm in a pretty good mood.

(12,146 posts)And gave rides to polls. And knocked on doors. And ran for office. And got on social media to make the Democrats' case and urge people to vote. And talked to friends and family who would listen.
Just good old election year elbow grease, shoe leather, and working hands and voices.

(2,253 posts)which is amazing considering the history of the party in power at the midterms, House or not.
The GOP was expecting to win big and they'll just win alright now. Trump backed losers are losing which is always great.
Fetterman won. Warnock is ahead as is Kelly in AZ. Democrats may INCREASE their margin in the Senate.
Considering how bad things looked going into yesterday we should all be ecstatic. Trump got fuckin' kneecapped last night.

(165,054 posts)and it's effect on "modeling" - whether for viral transmission/mutations - were all over the map... let alone how it impacted the economy, the MODELING for this election was all wrong here.
When Dems saw what happened with Dobbs, THAT was going to be an issue for people, young and old. But then suddenly over the summer, it was summarily dismissed as an important issue - taking your FUCKING RIGHTS AWAY was "way own on the list" - and people started yelling about "where is the messaging on Social Security and Medicare" and parroting 'it's the economy stupid".
Not every election fits neatly into some curve that the statisticians draw.

(10,464 posts)and doom and I was wrong for the most part. I would have hoped for more of a Roe effect, among other things that should have created a blue wave, but I take what I can get in this situation.
