They say I need to update it or my account will be closed. Is this spam?

if any link isnt yahoo, its likely a fake mail not Yahoo.

(8,387 posts)A lot of people won't realize that
http://badthing.yahoo.com.foo.com
is not Yahoo. Or that:
http://badthing.foo.com/yahoo.com
is also not Yahoo.
There are other ways to obfuscate the URL and still have "Yahoo" appear somewhere in it, so that people think it is real.
What's kind of funny is that whomever owns foo.com has DNS set up to resolve both of those URLs (to benign results in this instance).
Almost certainly. Yahoo will request that you provide a backup Email and/or mobile number to help if you get locked out, but never threaten you with account closure.

(8,387 posts)If you are curious to know whether you have a problem with your Yahoo account, log into your Yahoo account (do not click on anything in the email) and check your settings.
But, the odds of Yahoo sending you an email to notify you of a problem with your Yahoo account is ZERO.

Never click on those email links. Always log into Yahoo or any other provider directly.
Even if it looks legit or if it is legit. Only click on solicited links that you generate, such as for password resets.

(10,014 posts)One would think a company could devise a scam check against the bogus use of their own name.
Plus, last week Centurylink rolled out a technoogy rewrite or update and it totally screwed up customer's email accounts - missing emails, ghost emails, and lots of scam emails for supplements, prostate help, sleep aids, etc.
I was pretty sure it was spam.
