I want to focus on the positive for a moment. Please name something positive big or small that happened in yesterday's elections. It could be smaller local election, a ballot measure, a member of an underrepresented group being elected, poll numbers, a specific great candidate winning, an awful candidate losing, etc.
For instance,
1. Vermont was the only state to never have a female senator or congressman. That changed yesterday when Becca Balint won the house seat.
2. The winners of the governors race in MA, Maura Healey, and Oregon, Tina Kotek, are both lesbians. That means that we will have 3 states at the same time with governors who are lgbtqia+.

(39,154 posts)in an earlier post, flipped the State Legislature to blue. Democrats maintained control of the MI Supreme Court and we passed props to increase the financial transparency of politicians, approved early in-person voting, and abortion/contraception rights are now enshrined in our State Constitution.
It was a good day here in the Great Lakes State.

(39,154 posts)By 2016, after years of total GQP rule, Michigan was devolving into awfulness. The legislature passed and Governor Snyder had signed all sorts of heinous laws into effect (Economic "managers" who could fire elected officials, which happened, unsurprisingly, mainly in towns/cities with large minority populations, the terrible "right to fire" law, taxing the elderly and disabled in order to give corporations a $1.8B tax break, they poisoned an entire city's water supply, the list goes on. The lowest point came in 2016 when Michigan helped Mango Mussolini slither into the White House.
Then, in late 2017, things got interesting.
It started when citizens decided to circulate petitions to put recreational marijuana and anti-gerrymandering props on the ballot in 2018. That energized a lot of folks which benefited Democrats. The MIDems ran Whitmer for Governor, as well as Jocelyn Benson for Secretary of State, and Dana Nessel for Attorney General. They were high-quality candidates with concrete plans to improve life here in Michigan as opposed to the MIGQP which ran party hacks -- the usual suspects, lol. The most important thing that happened in 2018 was when the voters passed the anti-gerrymandering prop. The state had been gerrymandered to a ridiculous degree by the GQP-controlled legislature in 2011, which all but ensured permanent GQP rule in the legislature. When that prop passed, redistricting following the 2020 census was taken out of the hands of the legislature and into the hands of an Independent Citizen's Redistricting Commission.
In 2020, voters flipped the Michigan Supreme Court to blue and the MIGQP lost even more seats in the legislature but still held the majority and the legislative gridlock continued.
In 2021, the Independent Citizen's Redistricting Commission got to work redrawing congressional districts in a more equitable manner. After Roe v. Wade was overturned and an awful 1931 law banning all abortions was threatening to be reinstated motivated the Prop 3 petition drive that succeeded in spite of massive MIGQP opposition, which brought us to the vote on Tuesday. If we hadn't flipped the MI Supreme Court to blue in 2020, there's a very good chance that the prop wouldn't have made it onto the ballot.
The result? We flipped both houses of the legislature to blue for the first time in 40 years, swept all the state offices, kept control of the Mi Supreme Court, and enshrined abortion/contraception rights into the state constitution.
None of this would've happened without the citizens saying "enough is enough" and deciding to do something about it. It's up to us to change things.

(5,104 posts)The worst part, for me personally, is that I voted for Alex Villanueva in 2018. It is the only vote I've ever made (in a lifetime of voting) that I deeply (deeply) regret.
Villanueva positioned himself as a "progressive" in 2018 and had all the right endorsements from the party and unions. He snookered us all.
I'm elated that this thug is gone.

The Republican had no real experience, and she already hates Javier Salazar, our sheriff who has been investigating the DeSantis and Abbott bussing of the migrants.

(33,349 posts)which was a GAIN of TWO seats! One was a new seat due to Census count, and the other was a flip from Republican to Democrat.
We've been fighting gerrymandering by Republicans for over 10 years in the courts. Maps have been drawn and redrawn, up to the US Supreme Court and back again. At its worst, an almost equally divided state--in terms of total votes --was sending 10 Republicans and 3 Democrats to the US House of Representatives because the gerrymandering was so unfair. In 2023, NC will have 7 Democrats and 7 Republicans as Representatives to the US House.

Nevada Question 1, the Equality of Rights Amendment, was on the ballot in Nevada as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment on November 8, 2022.
A "yes" vote supported adding language to the Nevada Constitution that prohibits the denial or abridgment of rights on account of an individual's race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin.
A "no" vote opposed this amendment to the Nevada Constitution that prohibits the denial or abridgment of rights on account of an individual's race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin.
57% of Nevadans voted Yes.

(26,856 posts)NYC had some ballot proposals to address racial and other inequality.
It starts with an overall preamble of which this is a part:
We, the people of New York City, declare that our city is a multiracial democracy, and that our diversity is our strength. We honor and respect the cultures, languages, and histories of all who call and have called this land home, and we celebrate their revolutionary imagination, courage, and resiliency.
The preamble is to set the tone for new, and future proposals etc.
Such as setting up a Racial Equity Office inside the Mayor's office.
It also ties into NYS proposal about monies for climate change wherein watching out that poor neighborhoods often of color will get a far share, also maybe certain things to address already set inequities.

So that is still extremely disturbing to me as are many other things. I think the ones that were really emotional for me were Fetterman and Shapiro winning and they gave amazing victory speeches. I remember feeling that way when Warnock and Ossoff won also. Except then it was giving us equal footing in the senate and Biden had just defeated dumpster.
