PEW: Democrats Hold Governorships, Make State Legislative Gains

https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2022/11/09/democrats-hold-governorships-make-state-legislative-gains

Dispelling predictions of a red wave, Democrats seized complete control of the legislatures in Michigan and Minnesota, and held on to governorships in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, maintaining a bulwark against Republican-dominated legislatures in the latter two states.

Democrats also won historic victories in Maryland, where voters elected Wes Moore as the state’s first Black governor, and Massachusetts, where they chose Maura Healey as the state’s first openly gay governor. With those two victories, Democrats increased the number of states where they control the governor’s office and both legislative chambers to 18. Republicans had unified control of 23 states heading into yesterday’s election.

2. PA was redistricting

Nov 2022

It had some of the most comically gerrymandered districts in the country, routinely having a couple hundred to half a million more Ds than Rs vote in an election only to have Rs maintain sizable majorities in both chambers of the general assembly, and getting 11-12 or so of 17 congressman.

They got that adjusted so now we have one more congressman, and adjustments were made to general assembly districts that allowed Ds to get their first majority in the House this year in a long time.

Pennsylvania Democrats believe they have flipped the state House

by Anna Orso
Updated Nov 9, 2022

Pennsylvania Democrats believe they have taken control of the state House for the first time in more than a decade, an outcome that was considered a long shot by even the most optimistic Democrats but that has not yet been confirmed by independent analysts. Republicans on Wednesday said the declaration of victory was premature. They’re pinning their hopes on a handful of close races in the Philadelphia suburbs where the candidates are separated by hundreds — or in some cases just dozens — of votes.

Even if Republicans retained control, the surprise showing by Democrats still indicated that strong victories in statewide races for governor and U.S. Senate may have helped carry the party in down-ballot races. Democrats in other swing states outperformed expectations, including in Michigan, where the party won control of the legislature for the first time in decades.

Democrats said it showed that a favorable redistricting process in Pennsylvania gave them a fighting chance, and that swing voters were moved by Harrisburg’s now-total control over abortion policy in Pennsylvania. Democratic control of the House would have major implications for Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro’s ability to enact policy in Harrisburg next year. Republicans will retain control of the state Senate, but a House controlled by Shapiro’s party would strengthen his hand in negotiations with the legislature.

And it would all but guarantee abortion laws in Pennsylvania remain unchanged. The GOP has advanced legislation that would amend the state constitution to say there is no right to an abortion, but the legislation would require a majority of both chambers. State Rep. Leanne Krueger (D., Delaware), who chairs the party’s state House campaign arm, estimated that Democrats will win at least 102 seats of the 203-seat chamber. She based her projection on the number of mail ballots left to count in close races. Mail ballots have generally leaned toward Democrats.

IF IF IF this comes to pass, HERE is who will be the next Speaker of the Pennsylvania State House (she is Joanna McClinton, a Rep. for parts of West Philly & Delaware County) -

If anything, this election had an undercurrent that had to fight to reach the surface and be heard!

Pennsylvania Democrats have won the majority in the State House. The news gets better. Meet who will become the first Black Woman Majority Leader of the State House: @Joanna4PA

She is currently the PA state House Minority Leader but if the final races still undecided go our way (apparently a bunch are with mail ballots not yet counted) and we prevail, they are talking beyond "Majority Leader" but "Speaker". I posted the youtube of her righteous rant shown in the tweet, upthread.

Keep up the good work. If the young remain engaged we can win more and win better in future years.

Those have potentially great influence on the 2024 election.
