folks, I'm going to stay right here on twitter and ride this thing right down to the very bitter end. but when this big dumb beautiful site finally gives up the ghost, you'll be able to find me at @jefftiedrich@mastodon.social
holy fucking shit, Twitter Blue didn't even last a tenth of a scaramucci. this is one for the branding disasters hall of fame
The last of those three tweets refers to the news in this LBN thread: https://democraticunderground.com/10142993089

(49,384 posts)I went to their site and the whole server business was totally geeky and confusing.

(22,590 posts)Don't you have to sign up for the same server they're on? Jeff didn't say what server he's on.
I just read an article about Mastodon the other day, and it was confusing as hell. Plus I don't know if I'll ever get past the fact that when you post messages on Mastodon, it's called tooting! Seriously, Mastodon?

(689 posts)The servers are federated. That means that there is no central server but all of the servers are interconnected. You can follow others, and be followed, from any server. The most popular server appears to be https://mastodon.social
Barring any particular parameters that server would be a good default to sign up on.
If you would like to make your first connection you can follow me @Hyper_Eye@techhub.social
There a number of good things about the federated server approach. If a Musk-like figure were to come along and buy out a server you could just sign up and migrate to another one. If a particular server tends to have accounts that you don't care for (say a freeper server) you can block the entire server and never see anything from it or hear from anyone on it. Also if a server goes offline the overall network is still online. The software is also free and open-source so anyone can work on it and host it.

(31,308 posts)it pisses me off that i can't just delete it entirely.
the reason is that musk is fucking it up so badly that there's bound to be a data breach. I don't think i ever gave twitter financial information but somehow i think they have it anyway. For example: I donated on ActBlue for a candidate and then shared it on twitter.
Anyway that's what decided me. i checked out Mastodon but didn't sign up. I am still on fb and most importantly of all, still have DU.
DU has been the constant since gwbush decided to throw a war. I still shudder when I recall how distraught I was on 08Nov2016 with Hillary losing and the site going down. Like I'd been thrown into the ocean and lost my lifeline.

(689 posts)There's no for-profit organization to invest in. The network is decentralized with hosted servers around the world. Anyone can download the software and host a server.

Occupy Democrats is a dodgy clickbait site that pushes fake news and CT far too often, all in a cynical cash grab, plus it has stolen content with little to no attribution many times.

(2,937 posts)I had no idea. There is such a vast difference between what I read here about the founders of it and the experience I have there enjoying pet pictures, some fantastic photography, humorous posts, and of course news and pro-Democrat posts. I have never seen a single post of left-biased propaganda or anything else remotely objectionable to a true blue Democrat. I tried Mastodon and was very put off by the interface. No Twitter or FB for me. Since I have found people on Tribel whose posts I enjoy and relate to, I am going to stay there. We have a lot of Twitter refugees showing up every day. I guess somehow all this Occupy Democrats stuff managed to stay under the radar for a lot of us.

(23,715 posts)i looked over Mastedon a few weeks ago but didn't bother signing up because there simply wasn't anyone there that I followed on twitter to make it worth signing up for. I don't follow Jeff on twitter but it is nice to see someone actually trickle over there, and maybe if others follow I'll sign up.
One thing is for sure. i'm not going back on twitter.
