Inspired by the FR claims about the Planned Parenthood page, I've noticed there have been quite a few "health specialists" going around trying to claim that masturbation is unhealthy. Often times, they are not doctors, but just 'some guy in the health industry.' The logic goes thus: When you have an orgasm, this makes you uninterested in your partner, and toxifies your system with dopamine.
Of course you get dopamine released all the time...when you smell food, when you sip coffee, when you exercise, etc. If dopamine is so toxic, then we should be spending our lives in sensory deprivation chambers.
This all goes back to that myth of sexual addiction - the new spin on the old "hairy palms" canard.

(28,017 posts)the real sin is that so many promising kids and teens are ruined by religion. Falsehoods, fear, unnatural views of sex and other human behavior, - it warps them for years to come.
I once dated (once) a woman who I did not know was a trolling bible beating bigot, who agreed to the date solely to get me to attend their "church." Every member came up and greeted me, everyone tried hard to make me the most important person in the world, and every single person was smiling, holding my hand or putting their hand on my shoulder.
It creeped me out something fierce.
About ten years later, I accidentally ran into her again. She had married within the church, she was beaten to a pulp repeatedly by Dear Husband, she finally got enough guts together to divorce him, and she left that religion. Once she got out, she realized just how creepy and controlling everyone had been, including her parents. She was a very changed woman, and you could tell those wounds were not just physical.

My younger brother and sisters got to go to public school after my parents realized that the private catholic school was more expensive, but not really better. My brother and sisters still attend church and believe, and all that. They can't understand why I won't go. I simply do not believe in anyone else's religion. Besides, I went to enough church in my first 18 years to last me a life time. I would rather attend St Doggy Park's church.

(150,980 posts)Thanks for reminding me. However, I just finished reading the 1911 Boy Scout Manual on my Kindle. There was not a single reference to masturbation in it. Perhaps you have some incorrect information, at least about the US Scouting movement. Can you post a link for me to an actual Boy Scout manual where there is a reference to masturbation on "almost every page?" I'm afraid I'll have to insist on corroboration on this one. Not everything you hear is actually true, it seems.

(55,476 posts)Right from the start, Scouting led most other youth organizations in recognizing that puberty is a major hurdle for adolescents. But the early Handbooks provided information that was too often just as inaccurate as what a boy might hear from his buddies. The first three editions call their puberty section "Conservation", and primarily serve up the myth that masturbation (they of course do not use this word) will seriously weaken a boy's strength and make him less able to resist disease (hence the title "Conservation"

(39,961 posts)Here's the goal - no birth control, no abortion, no masturbation. No sexual activity without causing pregnancy. And since we all know abstinence works so well... you get the picture.
There's nothing evil or harmful about an orgasm, there's only evil and harmful reactions to people actually enjoying one. Look at female genital mutilation - designed to prevent women from having one. Freaking out about people enjoying sex and orgasms has caused more misery to the human race than many things.

(115,186 posts)Those don't seem to be arguing that any and all masturbation is bad, which seems to be what you're claiming in the OP.
They seem to me to be more about the idea that overindulgence has negative consequences.
Taverner
(55,476 posts)It's not my fault you don't pick up on that aspect
As for overindulgence in orgasms, that's not really possible. After a while, say after 12 of them, you'll be in no position to have another.
redqueen
(115,186 posts)As for overindulgence, it is not "in orgasms", it is "in masturbation". As in, as skin is stimulated, the receptors for sensation naturally lose their sensitivity. This is not an opinion. This is well-established scientific fact.
Furthermore, your OP did not state that any health specialists were on a campaign to claim that orgasms are bad. So it's still a misleading (and pointless) OP.
Taverner
(55,476 posts)Usually that sensitivity is lost because you develop thicker skin when you break it

(3,248 posts)The actual sin/transgression involved is the refusal of a man to impregnate his dead brother's wife.
Yes, really.
In the ancient Hebrew social system, women with no sons had no standing in the family. If a man died and left his wife with no children, it was customary for the man's closest male relative to impregnate the widow.
Any children would then be considered heirs of the dead son, and his widow would have all the rights of a daughter in law.
Onan refused to impregnate his brother's wife because he wanted all the family property for himself. Didn't want to create a nephew who would have rights to some of it. So he pulled out early and spilled his seed on the ground. G-d was not pleased at his selfishness.
DirkGently
(12,151 posts)This is the big problem with religiously-derived morality. There used to at least be some kind of sociological rationale for all these rules ascribed to gods. But the supposedly immutable nature of religious law means that even when social conditions change the deity-prescribed rule remains. It divorces the rule from its (supposed) rational basis. It's not, "Please don't waste any opportunity to enhance our number-dependent desert-dwelling tribe," but "Masturbation is evil."
Not smart.
So, barring vigorous re-interpretation or the convenient loss of some of the books, Judeo-Christian-Muslims are left with a moral code based on the needs and worldview of nomadic stone-age herdsman in Middle-Eastern deserts. They pat themselves on the back for getting the easy ones right (murder, theft) as though this is evidence ALL the wacky ancient rules therefore carry some kind of moral authority.
We've really got to do better.

Happiness in others is distressing to religious conservatives, and other scolds. You're only supposed to feel better when you have exhaustively confessed all your filthy sins and general unworthiness to God, preferably in front of them. Appearing to be having a good time is a sure sign that the Wikkidniss is afoot! Happy feelings that accompany sexual fulfillment and intimacy which were not obtained according to the strict requirements of -or in some cases under the direct supervision of- religious authorities, are the worst kinds of Wikkidniss of them all. (18,458 posts)" (John Harvey Kellogg) was an especially zealous campaigner against masturbation; this was an orthodox view during his lifetime, especially the earlier part. Kellogg was able to draw upon many medical sources' claims such as "neither the plague, nor war, nor small-pox, nor similar diseases, have produced results so disastrous to humanity as the pernicious habit of onanism," credited to one Dr. Adam Clarke. Kellogg strongly warned against the habit in his own words, claiming of masturbation-related deaths "such a victim literally dies by his own hand," among other condemnations. He felt that masturbation destroyed not only physical and mental health, but the moral health of individuals as well. Kellogg also believed the practice of "solitary-vice" caused cancer of the womb, urinary diseases, nocturnal emissions, impotence, epilepsy, insanity, and mental and physical debility; "dimness of vision" was only briefly mentioned.
...a method of treatment [to prevent masturbation] ... and we have employed it with entire satisfaction. It consists in the application of one or more silver sutures in such a way as to prevent erection. The prepuce, or foreskin, is drawn forward over the glans, and the needle to which the wire is attached is passed through from one side to the other. After drawing the wire through, the ends are twisted together, and cut off close. It is now impossible for an erection to occur, and the slight irritation thus produced acts as a most powerful means of overcoming the disposition to resort to the practice

(25,406 posts)Here are what they suggest to "overcome" this problem:
A Guide to Self-Control:
1. Never touch the intimate parts of your body except during
normal toilet processes.
2. Avoid being alone as much as possible. Find good company
and stay in this good company.
3. If you are associated with other persons having this same
problem, YOU MUST BREAK OFF THEIR FRIENDSHIP. Never
associate with other people having the same weakness. Don't
suppose that two of you will quit together, you never will.
You must get away from people of that kind. Just to be in
their presence will keep your problem foremost in your mind.
The problem must be taken OUT OF YOUR MIND for that is where
it really exists. Your mind must be on other and more
wholesome things.
4. When you bathe, do not admire yourself in a mirror. Never
stay in the bath more than five or six minutes -- just long
enough to bathe and dry and dress AND THEN GET OUT OF THE
BATHROOM into a room where you will have some member of your
family present.
5. When in bed, if that is where you have your problem for the
most part, dress yourself for the night so securely that you
cannot easily touch your vital parts, and so that it would
be difficult and time consuming for you to remove those
clothes. By the time you started to remove protective
clothing you would have sufficiently controlled your
thinking that the temptation would leave you.
6. If the temptation seems overpowering while you are in bed,
GET OUT OF BED AND GO INTO THE KITCHEN AND FIX YOURSELF A
SNACK, even if it is in the middle of the night, and even if
you are not hungry, and despite your fears of gaining
weight. The purpose behind this suggestion is that you GET
YOUR MIND ON SOMETHING ELSE. You are the subject of your
thoughts, so to speak.
7. Never read pornographic material. Never read about your
problem. Keep it out of mind. Remember -- "First a
thought, then an act."
The thought pattern must be changed. You must not
allow this problem to remain in your mid. When you
accomplish that, you soon will be free of the act.
8. Put wholesome thoughts into your mind at all times. Read
good books -- Church books -- Scriptures -- Sermons of the
Brethern [sic, Cistern too?]. Make a daily habit of reading
at least one chapter of Scripture, preferably from one of the
four Gospels in the New Testament, or the Book of Mormon. The
four Gospels -- Matthew, Mark, Luke and John -- above
anything else in the Bible can be helpful because of their
uplifting qualities.
9. Pray. But when you pray, don't pray about this problem, for
that will tend to keep [it] in your mind more than ever. Pray
for faith, pray for understanding of the Scriptures, pray
for the Missionaries, the General Authorities, your friends,
your families, BUT KEEP THE PROBLEM OUT OF YOUR MIND BY NOT
MENTIONING IT EVER -- NOT IN CONVERSATION WITH OTHERS, NOT
IN YOUR PRAYERS. KEEP IT _OUT_ of your mind!
